We are travelling to Lake Garda in May via Calais through Luxembourg, and Germany staying at "Camping Tennsee" near Mittenwald for a few nights. Has anyone any ideas on Overnight sites between Luxembourg and Stuttgart. Has anyone stayed at Tennsee and is the Zirleberg pass from Seefield to Innsbruck ok for our outfit, a twin axle Bailey Senator, towcar Range Rover DSE 2.5 Auto. I ask because the Caravan Club Europe Sites guide advises that the Zirleberg pass is unsuitable for caravans but I am told independantly that it is now ok.

Would not advise the Zirlberg, Very steep and several Hairpins ( unless it was recently upgraded)   Approach Innsbruck from the other side.  A 96  A 8  A 12

I agree would not be keen to tow a caravan on the Seefeld to Innsbruck road, not even sure its allowed. Better to go via the Fern Pass.

Thanks both for your replies, if I take the Fern Pass instead of Innsbruck and over the Brenner route to Garda, have either of you any experience of the Landeck, Pfunds, Bolzano route?

Regards

Hi John   sorry , haven't been that way but it looks ok from the CC handbook.  We tend to stick to the main roads when we have the van behind . Our Emerald is 1300kg so not that heavy, but our 940 is only 2 litre.  Which Bailey do you have?  We are thinking of going for a fixed bed van in 2 or 3 years time when we retire, looked at a Senator Wyoming (just on paper) liked the layout, must have my big shower room.  Too heavy for our present Volvo , so need to get a new car then too.

Re sites     the only ones we have been to in the area you mention are Camping Gritt near Ettelbruck in Luxembourg and Camping Heilbronn-am-Breitenauer-See near Heilbronn, listed under Lowenstein in the CC European handbook.

Stayed at Mittenwald but not on the site you have booked (??).  The one we were on is no longer listed (not surprised). Lots of sites at Garda, we used Camping Fornella and it was fine. Nice pool.

If you haven't booked Mittenwald then I can recommend Schlosscamping Volders near Hall in Tirol if you want to visit Innsbruck.  Quite near the Schwarovski factory.

Have a good trip!     Jennifer

Thanks for the sites info Jennifer,

The van is a Senator Wyoming 2005 model which we bought as our first van to occupy me during my early retirement! We checked out all the twin axle vans and this one met the following needs.

My requirement was a fixed bed, whilst my wife's was a good sized bathroom, which is odd because she is a lot slimmer than me. We find it excellent for weekends and have used it all through the winter and will be in Brecon this weekend with it.

We usually tow it with a Range Rover DSE 2.5 Auto which copes with everything we have faced so far, terrain wise, without our having to worry about MTLP, noseweight is rarely a problem but MPG is a bit savage at 20 - 23mpg. and solo 26-28 on a very good day. We occasionally tow with a BMW 5 Sport D Auto which is a dream of a towcar on tarmac but MTLP is close and noseweight even though 90kg is always a consideration.

Manual manouvering a twin axle is not easy, I had a Power Touch mover fitted from new and use it to hitch up if I am on my own. I also use it on sites if we want the front end against a hedge to take in the view, The mover also is excellent for awkward positioning of the van to deter thieves when parked in our drive.

I spoke to Bailey today, they have just announced a new Senator range which is 7ft 6 inches wide avail in June. I am interested in a penisular fitted bed to save clambering over my sleeping spouse when nature calls but the sacrifice is the end bathroom so we will wait and see.

Hope this is not too long winded and of some help.

Regards John D

if I take the Fern Pass instead of Innsbruck and over the Brenner route to Garda, have either of you any experience of the Landeck, Pfunds, Bolzano route

If you use the Fern Pass you join the Inntel motorway at Imst and then just carry onto the Brenner Motorway at Innsbruck. I can't give you details but I am sure I have seen a post either on here or another forum that said the Landeck/Bolzano route was fine for caravans but I have not used that route my self.

Thanks David I will have a look back through, I saw what seems to be quite a nice site in a town called Glorenza Glurns which is worth a visit if only for the name!.
