For the last few years we have used Norfolkline then DFDS Dover - Dunkirk. This year as DFDS are using Calais as well, we decided to go that way. Half an hour less journey time and the same cheap price as the old Norfolkline trips. We have noticed since DFDS took over, the time it takes to get the cars off at Dunkerque has really increased and I don't think its to do with how busy it is particularly.
In general how long does it take to get off the ferries at Calais and is it quick to get onto the A16 autoroute south? We have become so blasé with Dunkerque, Calais is going to be really exciting!

We've never done Dover/Calais with DFDS but like you we got more than a bit exasperated with the time take to unload at Dunkerque! That, and the long queue of HGV's out to the roundabout with the A16, and the last time we went we were significantly delayed and vowed not to go that way again.
It was always quicker with P and O via Calais - but whether that was Calais or P and O will remain to be seen. We've booked Dover/Calais crossings this year!
Thank you both. Yes Val the queues of HGV's on the roadabouts are worse now than I remember and when all you want to do is get on with your journey its frustrating. Tentz I am glad to hear it sounds better at Calais. Will be interesting to see how DFDS perform there. Its not like Dunkerque has loads of ferries like Calais, one does wonder why its become so much slower.

If I'm not mistaken DFDS have introduced premier boarding and disembarkation on their Dunkerque route, so perhaps that explains the delays in getting off the ferry there...
We commented that since P & O have launched the bigger ferries it seems to take much longer to unload the vast amount of vehicles. Last year we sat waiting for at least half an hour in our car. Thoughts?
It would depend on where you end up parked on the ferry & how crowded the ferry is for time taken, most important is just to be patient if you want to avoid damage. I once saw a motorhome driver knock a hole in the side of his vehicle from protruding metal because he could'nt wait a few mins. On P&O you can pay extra for priority disembark if you really can't wait & they put you by the doors.
Dunkirk takes longer because of design of ship & access road is tighter, I really can't see an issue here, time between best & worst is only going to be 20mins & it is far better just to take one's time & go with the flow.

Absolutely. My wife and I love the ferry because its gives us more time to relax ahead of the drive in France than going by the Tunnel... so why worry about 10-15 minutes here and there?
It's not always 10 or 15 minutes, or even 20 or 30 minutes. Our journey took two hours and fifteen minutes, we waited half an hour after the ship had docked before the first cars left our deck and we were quite a lot later than that as it was one of those where cars had to go around the deck and down a ramp - and then queues for 45 minutes to get to the roundabout with the A16. As we'd caught the early morning ferry, thinking we'd be on the road about coffee time it was actually well after lunchtime before we felt we were 'off'.
Does anybody worry about how long you sit on the docks at Dover before you board, especially when you are at the front of a lane and that lane is called last.

Use Tesco vouchers and go via the tunnel, all border formalities are carried out BEFORE boarding, when you arrive at 't other end, you just drive off the train straight onto the motorway and you're off. No waiting for HGVs, and if you arrive earlier than your booked time you can usually get on an earlier train without paying extra.

Just a thought.

its frustrating because it always seems to happn, in truth it probably doesnt! as you know what time ferry youre on, then at least you know what time youre leaving, theough there doesnt seem to be any reason why they are loading lanes that arrived after you!
its the getting off at the other end that really annoys me - it takes forever, or at least it seems to on both dfds and p&o - this easter we are reverting back to the shuttle, not much difference in cost and because weve got the small camper we can use the off peak times and make the use of the free aires over in france before setting off on our journey to the vendee (cos i dont want to be driving through the night) - bit of an adventure really!!!
