If you give us a bit more info we can give you better recommendations.

Are you tent or van? Do you have children to consider? How far do you want to travel? Do you need sea, river or lake?

I don't think the south, and beaches, go together with 'peaceful sites' but the Ardeche area would be a good one, with everything you need including a river instead of beach, plus spectacular scenery and lots of possible sites.  Or a suggestion of Les Peupliers in the Gorges du Tarn which is in a lovely riverside setting.

When are you going?  Can you go towards the end of August rather than late July/earlier in August?   Les Peupliers takes Camping Cheques from 25th August or an alternative would be the ACSI Card site, Les Prades (12 euros per night after 25th August) so with either of these you could combine a week at full price, and then a second week at a really good discount, making an inexpensive holiday.

Take a look at the ACSI Card website or the Camping Cheque websites for details

We've been to la guyonnairre in the vendee for the past 2 years and would recommend. We have 3 boys that like doing typical boy stuff and they really enjoy this site. Everything is a little drive away from the site, such as beaches and supermarkets, yet equally there is a lot to do on site. The weather has generally been pleasant enough.

My family (3 kids at 3, 6 and 8) and I have been to I'ile de offard in Saumur for the last couple of years - 5 hours from Calais - large pitches, good swimming pool, short walk into town and great views.

if you want to travel a bit further then we also stay at le Domaine du Roumingue south of Bordeaux on the Bay of Arcachon. this has a swimming pool, a lagoon with sandy beach to swim, activities etc..
