We have booked to go argeles, close to Spanish border in the summer and want to stop over twice on the way down. We have 5 children so need to spread the journey out a bit! Any ideas of where to stop and he best route to take? Was thinking something like Orleans and millau, what do people think? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Yes, if you'e doing the route from Calais/Dunkerque towards Argeles..  There are sites in both places which would be good for an overnight stop.  We've stayed at both over  the years.

Any suggestions of sites? We tried to book through the caravan club but we were over sized for most of their sites! When you search there seems so many around both places but difficult to tell how far they are from the main roads. This is the furthest trip we've been on to date!

Bords de la Eure in Chartres, book yourself on the website, or just turn up before about 4.00 pm.

In MIllau there are lots of sites alongside the Tarn/Dourbie rivers, and just 'google' Camping MIllau and all these sites will show up.  You don't need to book through the Caravan Club.  In Orleans the site is to the south of the city, at Olivet.  We've stayed there in the past, in MIllau there are several sites are all alongside the river to the east of the town.   Email me at valathomenow(at)tiscali.co.uk if you want more detailts.

We've done the Calais to Argeles run several times, going via Rouen, Chartres and Orleans and enjoyed stays at Salbris(Camping de Sologne),
Nouan le Fuzelier(La Grande Sologne),Orcet(Le Clos Auroy), St Flour(Camping International)and Millau(Les Rivages).
We picked them all for ease of access on the route down, and just booked directly with the sites.
Orcet,St Flour and particularly Millau are worth longer stays.

We also stayed at Orcet (Le Clos Auroy) and Millau (Les Rivages) on our way down to Argeles. We arrived late into France and we made just past Paris, but I can't remember where we stopped.The first two days were long but we got to Millau quite early in the afternoon so had time to relax and have a dip in the pool and a mooch at the Millau Viaduct.

Just a tip - what day do you plan to get to Argeles as the Coast road on the weekend is a nightmare and very busy!

Hi there, we have been driving to Argeles from Calais for the last 7 years with 3 kids.

We try to break up the journey into 3 parts - 2 days of 5 hour drives and the last day with about 3 hours of driving. The journey normally goes past Limoges and Cahors - However we have started staying our second night near bordeaux which adds some time on the last day's drving.

Our first stop is in the Loire Valley - campsites that we can recommend are near Suevres http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=7486 or in Saumur http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=5632

both are very child friendly and good for adults (Bar and take-away)

For the second night we either stop at a site near Bordeaux or have for a few years stopped about an hour south of Cahors.

then on the third day is just a short drive (in comparison to the miles you've already done!) to Argeles and when you pass Carcassonne it is 1 1/2 hours drive from Argeles.
