We have a motorcaravan and are booked on Eurotunnel this summer. They state that the LPG tanks must not be more than 80% full and that they will check this. Does anyone know how they do this? How can we check - other that weighing an empty tank and a full tank and working out 80% from that?

TBH Eljaygee,

I've never seen campers being checked on the train, although that's not to say that 'random' checks aren't made?  I do know the rules have been changed, as Eurotunnel didn't used to allow gas on board. Now they do. There's a magnetic 'sticker' that you can buy from accessory shops that shows the contents of your cylinders. They can be a tad confusing though!

Do you have a refillable on board tank or is it referring to LPG for road fuel ?

The latter would be easy to quantify from the vehicle fuel gauge

When we went through with the caravan we were sent to a separate place to have the gas cylinders checked to see that they were off .(UK side but French side no !)

Devil of a job to get back into the queue afterwards

Just had a look on the Euro Tunnel website and it refers to heating etc tanks as I thought your posting read

Unless the tank has a gauge I can't see how they can tell how much is in

Somebody must have thought it sounded good from a safety point of view

It does but it isn't practical !!

Hi Eljaygee

Yes they do check - depending on what time of day you travel !!!

We moved to France last October with our car & 40 foot RV (with LPG) --- ALL they where interested in was a passport for our UNBORN son... OK it was 6AM!

Anyway - remember LPG is a lot cheaper here in France - ASK for a UK adaptor, or if you have a USA lpg tank ASK for a Dutch one...

Good Luck

Thanks for the replies, I should have made it clear that we have LPG gas (propane) bottles.

If you have bottles they just ask you to turn them off in England

The French merely say "au revoir" and san fairy ann

They just checked our Camping Gaz bottle was turned off before boarding.
They don't allow LPG powered vehicles to use Eurotunnel.

"We regret that LPG and dual powered vehicles cannot be accepted for transport by Eurotunnel. We are able to accept campervans, caravans and other recreational vehicles carrying fixed LPG containers used for powering domestic services (refrigeration, cooking, heating)."

Adrian thanks for that

That was what I understood before I read this posting but it made me wonder if things had recently changed

It is L P G tanks for cooking / heating etc that are allowed but its difficult to understand why one is allowed and the other isn't unless its volume .

I would of thought it's possible to have a fixed tank/s for domestic services that are as large as a tank for the engine.
Maybe it's using LPG to drive on and off the train that they don't like. If this is the case, a manual tap at the tank would meet their requirements if they were to allow it.

A friend of mine has a Range Rover with LPG/petrol that is thinking of coming with us to France for the first time this year. His being unable to use the tunnel means we won't either. So they aren't just losing ticket sales to LPG users.

I think you've almost hit the nail on the head.   I imagine your bottles will be the same as ours, in that at the top there will be an aluminium collar, fitted at the time of production/testing.  It should be stamped with the empty weight of the bottle.  In my case, currently 2 bottles at 13 lbs and one at 12 lb  8 ozs - and they will vary.  Sometimes all three bottles have been different weights.  Only the numbers are stamped, not the 'lbs' or 'ozs'.  So mine are stamped "13"  and "12 08" respectively.

I can't remember what the approximate additional weight of the gas is when it's full, but your gas supplier should be able to tell you roughly - or you can weigh the bottles as we used to do and attach a luggage label.  Then, it's down to using some Salter Little Samson fishing scales and doing some quick maths!

We haven't used the tunnel for a good few years when towing, but when we did they insisted on checking that the bottles were not attached to the regulator, that they were fully turned off and that the black plastic caps were screwed on to the gas outlet.  At that time they did not weigh the bottles.

(It used to be in the conditions of travel on hovercraft and I think on the ferries, that fuel tanks on vehicles were only half full, but in all the times I've crossed the channel, they've never checked.  So, whether they will actually check the bottles, I don't know).

On the one occasion we used the Tunnel when carrying calor gas, we were kept back with other gas carriers and put into separate compartments.  Perhaps they consider the carriage of gas to be a bigger risk in a more confined space.  Certainly, on the ferries it's never been a problem.

BTW, there's another number stamped on the aluminium collar which shows the last two digits of the year that the bottle needs to be re-valved and tested.

My local Calor Gas depot supplied this info some years ago, so you may want to call yours to check that it's still the same.  The chap was concerned when I said that I used to shake the bottle around a little to guess how much gas I had left as there can be some foreign matter in the bottom of a bottle and disturbing it is not a good idea!  He said that he'd heard of cases of people actually inverting bottles when checking them for content ...... and apparently that is a definite no-no!

HTH

LOL John!   I do that with my cans of shaving gel ....... putting the can in the hot water in the basin for a minute before I shave, can get an extra week or so out of it!

Not sure I'd do it with gas bottles though!  (I have an image of somebody dangling a calor gas bottle over an open fire!!)      :-)
