I am interested in buying a mobile air conditioning unit by "Cool my Camper", for my caravan, at £450  they are expensive so don't want to regret it, does anyone own one or know anything about them other than info on website.  Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Tammie,

As you have entered this thread on the Camping abroad section I assume you are planning for your trip to be abroad (not often you would need Air Con in this country). Depending on where you are planning to go you may have problems running any AC unit. Most sites in France are limited to 6 amps per pitch and I suspect your proposed AC unit would reach that without reckoning on your other electrical requirements.

Probably worth checking on your proposed itinery to find what the sites you are thinking of using provide and limit usage to. Some sites specifically will not allow AC units because of noise.

Worth doing some homework before you make the investment.

John

It only draws 1.52amps & output is 700 watts of cooling, 2,400 Btu/h so anybody with technical knowledge should be able to work out if that is sufficient to cool a caravan at southern European temps & answer the op question.

Thanks for replies, yes I have done as much research as I can, but just wanted to know if they are as good as they say they are!

We are going to the South of France and previous years it has been unbearable at night in the caravan and as I don't sleep well anyway I thought this might be the answer, (they are supposed to be quiet too). We could also use it at home and when we change the caravan, take it with us.

We do have fans, but not keen at night.

Many thanks

Yep Tammie, when we were down in the Southern Ardeche last July, one or two folk were saying how uncomfortable it was in the caravan at night due to the heat, even one of the folk in a Static mentioned the same, although they had left the windows open overnight, which lead to a Mozzie feeding feast in there unit, apparently there were no mozzie screens on the windows in the Statics, so I gave them my spare mozzie window net.

Strange thing is, we were absolutely fine in our cotton Tent, even with the ZiG fully zipped up and all doors completely closed, with just the mozzie net windows to let the air in.

I think an AirCon unit is an absolute must in a caravan for the South of France in the peak of summer, when I was doing my caravan research, I discovered that you can retro fit under bench units into caravans, which would be easy to take out for use in another van when the time comes, the Dometic unit was around £800 definatley a better solution than the roof mounted units you see imho.

Would a portable home/office type not be of any use. A lot cheaper.

One thing to consider is noise & I think the op should take this point seriously. It hangs on the side of the caravan. Many campers cannot sleep with a coolbox running & if this a/c unit makes more noise than that then I certainly would not tolerate it right next to any tent that I was trying to sleep in. What sounds quiet daytime can sound much louder at night.

Roof mounted units by major manufactures are quiet & also out of the way but certainly noise levels on this unit need to be ascertained. It does seem odd though that anybody would want to go on holiday where they find the heat 'unbearable'. The place to go is south west France coast. Warm daytimes & pleasantly cool at night.

If the OP says 'We do have fans but not keen at night' then I can't imagine an air-conditioning unit would be any quieter than a fan.  Before buying I would want to compare it with the noise of a fan, or the blown air in the caravan - which we find keeps the caravan cool.  I must admit we have all our windows and door open all day, with the mozzie screens across, and similarly the rooflights, with the mozzie screens - and if the fan is on then the heat doesn't build up in the caravan, and we've never found it too warm.

We did have a day when the daytime heat reached 39 degrees, but we still managed to keep cool, as above.

I also attempted to obtain some info on the unit you are looking at. I gave up and bought a roof mounted unit, there is no noise and no problem with power supply. Oh, and you can sleep like a baby....

In France last year we moved to the west coast fron Gien after 3 days of 39 deg .windows open and fans on made little difference, we were baked. Our neighbour on the site, went to Mister Bricolage..(French B ánd Q) and bought a portable Aircon unit for his Motorhome. It cost about £300 and his Motorhome was freezing! Could be that they are much cheaper in hotter countries

i have just bought two split unit air con units for my self and a friend. they are for statics and can provide both heating and cooling - just need to get the to france now and fit them !!!

benefits as i see them are that they heat and cool, fan is not attached to the van, its mounted on rubber pads adjacent to the van and we can duct hot/cold air into all the rooms by using flexible ducting 'hidden; under tha van, yes its a lot of work, but i think it will be worth it!
