Hello. Has anyone got recent experience of camping in Portugal? The last time I camped there was over 20 years ago so I guess that things may be a bit different now. We are a family of 4 with a TT and are thinking of touring Portugal in the summer. Thanks

Where abouts and when? There are lots of campsites all down the Atlantic coast. Inland they get a bit fewer  and packed solid in the high season. We liked the camp at Guimaraes - new with all sorts of facilities; nice town (City of Culture a few years back).

In 2009 we stayed at Camping Turiscampo, Espeche, near Lagos on the Algarve. A lovely site with lots to see nearby.Lagos has at least 3 supermarkets and is a nice town to wander round. The coast is beautiful with lots of great beaches. The site is a Camping Cheques site in low season and is very easy to find off the Motorway.

Another vote for Turiscampo , we have just returned from there after are 3rd visit in the last 5 years and its gets better each time.
The staff are excellent and the new shower block is ultra modern.

Thanks. We are restricted by school holidays I'm afraid. Ideally we would like to have a mix of beach, countryside and old towns, but without excessive crowds. We are hoping to spend 2 weeks in Portugal, staying 3 or 4 nights at a time.

Portugal's a very interesting and varied country, and there's so much more to it than just the Algarve.  Five years ago we spent four weeks touring , starting at Quarteira, then going to Evora (a lovely old town), Lisbon, Figuera da Foz (with a visit to Coimbra, another historic city), Porto, and finally Caminha.  To be honest the campsites we stayed at weren't quite up to the standards of Spain or France, but were OK.  Most were part of the Orbitur chain.  The only one I really wouldn't recommend was Orbitur Madalena, Porto, although the city itself was wonderful, and there are several other sites in the area which are probably better.

Agreed - there's a lot more to  Portugal than the coast - try to gt to one of the smaller old towns. So I should correct what I said earlier, recommending Guimaraes - I meant Coimbra as suggested here! Guimaraes is very noice too ....

I should also say that it's easy to  eat out reasonably cheaply in Portugal and a good experience.

We were at Turiscampo in November. A great site. The restaurant does an evening buffet at a very reasonably price and it is excellent. Bus stop just outside the gate to go into Lagos. Lovely shower block.

We loved Turiscampo, great facilities and very friendly staff and owners. On site facilities and restraunt excellent. We also loved Evora such a pretty walled town. When we were there 2 years ago, Prince Charles visited the town on his way to Lisbon and we were right in the middle of the  visit and got quite close to him.

Orbitur sites are a bit dated and many feel they need a fair bit of love and attention. If you are looking for inland sites then maybe the group of sites run by Dutch couple might be of interest? Really well kept, clean and modern.

http://www.rdpcampings.eu/

We found 3 other Dutch sites inland and they were all first rate - all much smaller scale than Orbitur, - 20-30 pitches rather than 200-300.

I would also vote Turiscampo - it really would be difficult to find fault there, 3 years running for us and it improves each time.
