Hi! We're camping in France for the first time this year! Can anyone recommend a stopover place after we get to Cherbourg (and before we drive on to the west coast), please? Are there motels with secure parking for our over-stuffed car + trailer? Is there a particular chain of hotels that are good? (I'm thinking Travel lodge type standard). Thanks!

I use the B&B hotel on the outskirts of Cherbourg secure parking when the gates are locked at night, never had a problem,or the B&b hotel at Avranches if you want to drive a little before stopping for the night.
You can book on line and turn up whenever you want to.
These are the cheapest, reasonable stops you'll find: Formule 1
They are all exactly the same ... and clean.
All rooms are designed with a double and a single overhead.
They have lock up compounds ... and, if you book ahead, you can get in at any time using a credit card. They cover most major cities/towns in France ...
Ibis is worth looking at, too ... next step up, and fairly well spread around the country: Ibis
We found the best way to find somewhere these days is to use booking.com, which has everything from the budget hotels such as Formule 1 and B&B, to upmsrket bed and breakfast places.
You can select the number of people and the number of rooms, and find everything from a single room to a family room sleeping six.

Formule 1 and Etap hotels have been rebadged as Ibis Budget hotels, though not all of them yet have private en suite bathrooms. The standard Ibis is one grade higher priced, and there is also a group of Ibis Styles hotels as well. They are all part of the giant Accor hotels group, which includes higher grades too.
Thanks, they sound just what we're after. Do we have to specifically look for secure parking? A lot of the hotels say private parking, but I'm just concerned about all our stuff being a bit obvious and vulnerable! Any advice?
In a town, I would go for secure parking, in the countryside, private parking, preferably at the back of the hotel would be the ideal. It is possible to check out the parking at most hotels on Google maps satellite view.
