I have booked a camping trip to Lake Garda in Italy in August.

It has just crossed my mind that it could be too hot for a tent in that region during August. Can anyone comment on the temperature during the day and at night? Do you need to stay somewhere with air conditioning or do things cool down during the night?

Hopefully my concerns are unjust but it would be helpful to hear from someone with personal experience.

We've been on Garda, Iseo and Como in August ... no problem ... unless you don't like it above 25.
Nights are cooler, obviously, but nothing that a light cover, or maybe a jumper (though probably not, would deal with.
Have a look here and here

It's lovely, with a cooling breeze pretty much every afternoon.

I'd recommend checking that your pitch has shade though as the sun is pretty strong in the middle of the day.

When we were near Garda in Aug 11, our folding camper was cool enough for our 18 month old to comfortably have his after lunch nap in his cot.

Fantastic njones thats just what I wanted to hear.  The site we have booked in Malcesine  is in an olive grove so we should be ok for shade. Thanks again.

I know that campsite, I stayed a couple of times in Camping Maroadi in Torbole, but made a couple of trips to Malcesine.

I would love to go back with the family now that my kids are older. I prefer the Northern end of the lake (where you are staying), it is more rugged, and a bit of a mecca for high adrenalin sports.

I really cannot recall ever being too hot at night - I do remember that the tent would be pretty unbearable by 10am. I would recommend taking jumpers as it can be pretty cool in the evenings - remember that the lake is right in the mountains, in fact from Malcesine, you can take a cable car up to a skiing resort - mainly used for walking and down hill mountain biking in the summer

Just been looking at this thread and have looked at the website for Camping Maroadi. the pitches look awfully cramped and everyone seems to be bearing down on their neighbours. Is that how it really is?  I'd like somewhere that has pitches like the French do with plenty of space, Any recommendations for the Lake Garda area for 2 adults and 2 kids (8 and 6)?

Claydoncamper,

The pitches at Lombardi which is in Malcesine are all about 8.5 mtrs x 8.5 mtrs and yes it is a little cramped.  That said all of the sites I looked at in the area are the same. The facilities were exceptional, very clean and modren.  Given that we left site after breakfast every day and only returned in the afternoon to have a shower before venturing back into the town for an evening meal the space was not a big issue.  I would recommend this site for its location to the town and would go back again myself.  I'm sure when you see how fantastic the town and lake area is you won't want to be in any campsite for long.  If you go to Malcesine be sure to visit the bar to the left of the old harbour and give Peter my regards.  Malcesine is is a place not to be missed.

P.S. you are not going to get a French sized pitch in the Garda area.

claydoncamper, have a look at camping piantelle, they have pics of every touring pitch so you can pick your won and know what it looks like before you arrive. Looks a lovely site and on my shortlist of two sites for next year.

I stayed at camping Maroadi for a couple of summers a few years ago - pitches were smallish, but we did have a really good time. The lake is pretty chilly as there is a river that comes off the mountains that feeds into the lake a couple of hundred metres from Camping Maroadi, also the water gets deep quickly and it tends to be windy at that end of the lake - for these reasons I haven't taken the kids to Garda, even though it is an area I really love

As AWBH says, the towns are really lovely, Malcesine, Riva Del Garda and Torbole are all great, the scenery is stunning and this is the place to be if you like water sports, Canyoning, mountain bike cycling, sight seeing etc

Claydoncamper, there are quite a few campsites with decent-sized pitches further south on Lake Garda, some up to 150 sq. metres (according to details in the ACSI book).  The land there is much flatter. However the top end of the lake is very narrow with steep sides so there isn't much room for generous pitches, but the scenery is more spectacular.
