We're of the SW France in the last two weeks of August. We have a stop-over in Limoges on the way down and the routes Via-michelin and Google maps show me, go via Paris and a short run on the Peripherique. Has anyone experience with driving on this road? Should I be concerned?

Most people on here including me will tell you to avoid the Peripherique. It has now been by passed by the relatively new route to the east from Charles de Gaulle airport. Take the N104/A104 from there to south of Paris then picking up the appropriate auto route, A10 in the direction of Orleans.

You can avoid that route altogehter by going via Rouen, Evereux, Chartres to Orleans.

You don't go on the Peripherique, that the city centre ring rd. If you are coming down the A1 from Calais just pass under Charles de Gaulle airport & watch for signs A10 Bordeaux, follow these signs all along the dual carriageways until you get onto A10 on 'tother side of Paris & onto A10 then A71/A20 to Limoges.

If you want to avoid Paris the other route from Calais is down to Rouen, Chartres, Orleans gets you onto A71. Similar distance, much less toll but will take somewhat longer.

There is an outer ring road as well as inner Périphique, we have been on the inner, its ok but it was not peak period. There are run ons in the underpasses-quite short, so you have to watch out for kamikaze parisien drivers!

. Just need care! Outer one is busy but a bit better.

you will get the same advice from anyone who know France - Peripherique? NON!!

the Francileinne is fine ie N104 as mentioned above be careful when it joins the A4 motorway it may have 6 lanes but they will be busy if not full

We always take the Portsmouth Le Havre route, working out that in diesel, time and hassle its so much easier and cheaper. We always take the Saturday night ferry, getting into Le Havre at 8.00. On Sundays there is practically no trucks on the road and we then go the Le Mans, Tours, Vierzon, Clermont Ferrand route and over night in an aire just south of Clermont.

the Périphique is fine. ive had no trouble ever for the last ten or so years. saying that if your not over happy about driving in the uk then your not going to be feeling to great about driving over in france.

I have used the Periphique a few time over the years, its OK but you have to be positive in your manoevers, not a place to faff about! keep alert, keep up with the flow.

PS. I have a mate who calls it the Terrorferique

drove on periphirique going to and from holidaylast year with a twin axle caravan it was fine just know your exit and stay in the correct lane we did trust our sat nav and it was great absoultely faultless. and we went in August !

Don't most folk now use the A86 Tunnels to get through Paris these days, it has been a good few years since we went via Paris as we always use the Eastern Autoroutes to get South of Lyon from Dunkerque.

The Tunnel was only opened a couple of years back, and is a Duplex design so traffic is travelling in oppasite directions in the same tunnel!.

Of course there is a 2m height restriction so not much use for most caravaners, but fine for many Tent campers.

hello,
have used this route for many years i am a hgv driver the ring road can be daunting at first but remember YOU have the right of way on entering from any slip road,the french will move over make sure your mirrors are positioned for a wider view on the nearside.this road is always busy and fast,the exits are fairly close so keep your eyes peeled for yours.also dont forget on this road they will pass on either side,so once on keep to nearside lane so you can exit easily.have a safe trip.
