Hi. We are taking our tent to France for the first time this June, hoping to travel around the southern half of the country.

We really like campsites in the Uk that are basically a field and a toilet block - no entertainments or hardstandings or pitches divided into little boxes by hedges.

Do such sites exist in France?

Ideally we would like to be able to do some cycling in the area (with 4 kids so nothing too demanding!) but really a bit of grass without too much else would be ideal.

Any suggestions???

Look at the numerous discussions on municipal campsites which will often fulfil your wishes.

In France we are keen on the little hedges and trees for shade, wide open fields with tents and caravans scattered about are not common.

Also with the cycling how flat would you like it?

This one has lots of grassland with non-defined pitches ... next to a lovely little village, right on the banks of the Dordogne ... canoe hire nearby ... easy cycling, too.

Some of the pitch's in the South of France can be quite hard baked, not only do we use a Tarp (FootPrint) but also use a Imm Thick Butyl Rubber Ground Sheet (aka Pond Liner) , in order to help protect the ZIG of the Tent.

You can get the 1mm Butyl Rubber Pond Liner of the roll upto 12ft wide for 50p per Sq ft.

Thanks for that help. I didn't even know there were municipal campsites, so am following up on that thread and other suggestions.

Re: cycling - have 8 year old with little stamina. The worse is long, slow climbs. She can cope with short, sharp inclines by pushing up, but otherwise needs pretty flat. As we are moving around we won't need to cycle every place we stay.

You can also find 'Camping a la Ferme' sites - with just a few pitches, and a basic shower block - and you can have a look at 'Bienvenue a la Ferme' website' for details. Unfortunately I can only get the French version up at the moment, but I'm sure there is an English version available.  If not then use google translate or post again if you have a problem.

For flat but with an interest have a look at the areas along side the canals of southern France ie Canal du Midi

This one on the Canal du Midi has grassy pitches and is tightly sandwiched between the canal and the river Garonne ... cycle path runs past the camp site and is as flat as the proverbial pancake ... the site is very cheap, too! Boat hire nearby.
There's an excellent municipal at Arcais here's the link . The area is a huge lacework of canals and flat cycle paths ... very pretty ... biking and paddle punting are the two big things to do. The campsite is grass, unboxed in ... simple and cheap with a brand new 'Services' building, and is a thirty metre walk into the village.
