Hubby and I have just booked the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam from 16th to 30th September! Woo hoo!!!
This is our first time camping abroad with our own tent. We're well seasoned UK, mostly Scotland campers so probably more kitted up for rain, wind and cold!
Will I need loads of fleece? Wellies and whatnot?
As yet we've not decided our route but want to tour a bit in Germany or France, likely Belgium. Happy to de-camp and move around every 2-3 days.
Any tips and ideas would be appreciated.

From my research the areas we've been looking at across the Netherland borders all look a lot nicer, temperature, wind and rain wise, than we're used to in Scotland. UK weather's pretty variable isn't it...
Yes weather in Holland is the same as across the water in SE England I should have pointed out. You can of course get quite warm weather in September but you don't know. The general weather pattern in Holland is much the same as SE UK, ie changeable.
If you travel right down to south Germany it could well be still quite warm as its more of a continental climate but if winter is setting in early it could be colder. In the area you are considering just take same clothing as you would in UK.
Holland is really nice though & most people speak English, plenty of nice scenery & inland water even though its all built by the Dutch & not natural. They are into camping in a big way & have good campsites.

The Dutch designs some of the best tents and trailer tents capable to withstand stormy weather, so that they don't let the weather bother them.

I didn't mean to focus so much on the weather as it's not our only reason for traveling abroad - the landscape, culture, walking, food & drink really appeal.
Yes, it would be nice to experience some different weather conditions as we're very used to camping on the west coast / highlands of Scotland hence our kit is based on that kind of camping. I'm considering not taking my wellies and numerous winter base layers and fleece this and that overseas - outrageous I know!
It would be really good to hear about what campsites are like over there - are they like our UK ones?

Should we consider the ACSI?
Yes - Have a look through the ACSI CC (Camping Card) list (as opposed to their larger list of inspected sites) before buying the book, which includes the card, either direct from ACSI, Vicarious Books or the Camping and Caravanning Club.
Remember that there may be local taxes to add to the ACSI rate, particularly in the Netherlands.

Having lived in Aalsmeer for 3 years its a great place to go Holland that is and not really that big a country you can be in Belgium or Germany in 2 hours form Amsterdam...
Dutch mostly speak English as a second language. and campsites you will generally find better than UK ones like anything with exceptions of course
The Dutch are a pretty tidy nation in general...
Just one thing when being offered something you want, say a bread roll try not to say thank you or dutch equivalent of dank je (said Danka) they generally take the item away thinking you dont want it
So if you want it say the more formal (said alstublieft) formed from 'als het u blieft' that means you want it and thank you all in one
Its perhaps the most mad bit of the dutch language

You are from the West Coast of Scotland. The weather in Holland or Northern Germany will not be worse than where you are. Expect some rain and wind. September may be glorious so don't forget light clothing as well. As almost everywhere near the coast the "onion-look" applies.
As for the route: I love the little Frisian towns and can recommend Camping Hindeloopen on the Ijsselmeer.

You've got the whole range - from small farm sites (try www.vekabo.com for examples) - up to big sites with amazing facilities such as indoor and outdoor watersports centres, adventure playgrounds and restaurants of a style that we don't have at all.

We are in the 3rd week of a 6 week tour of Holland and have found some really good sites. The Dutch are a very friendly people and, as said previously, nearly all speak English. The facilities are all kept spotless, being cleaned several times a day and, if you enjoy watersports, many of the sites have lakes where we have been fishing and kayaking. We have used Camping Cheques on most sites.
