Hello everybody(we are new to this site)

We're thinking of towing our caravan from Clermont-Ferrand to Bezier on the A75, we've heard that this is a hilly route.
We will be towing a Lunar Zenith 5 (1300 kg) with a Mitsubishi Carisma (1.9 turbo diesel engine). We would like to use this route - does anyone think we'll have any problems?

Regards

Mostyn and Lena

No I don't think so. It's a spectacular trip in fine weather. Take it easy and enjoy the views. Have a good trip. And welcome to the forum of course.

The hills are long not steep at all, just a gentle climb up to the height of Snowdon.

The road climbs to about 1170 metres above sea level. There are some very long climbs but provided you use your gears sensibly you should not have any problems. The final decent is slow and twisty.

Don't labour the engine up long inclines even if car is towing ok or temp gauge will climb. Keep engine revving a bit in lower gear to keep temp down. If gauge does start climbing put heater on, it wil bring temp down.

Agree with the other posts, we've done this route the last two years en route to ariege region although not towing a caravan, we have a small trailer, topbox and three teenagers ,so a fair bit of weight to haul around. The hills are long but not overly steep, the last descent down onto the flat near lodeve is slow and twisty for towing vehicles but nothing to worry about. The other good thing about this route is no tolls apart from the millau viaduct. If you do take this route it can get busy at weekends in both directions, northbound more so last year in August.

We're done the downward stretch from Severac le Chateau to Beziers a couple of weeks ago with a Mondeo 1.9 turbo diesel, and a caravan with a MTPLM of  1350 kg - and we've done the whole route many times in the past with the same combination, with no problems whatsoever, either heading south, or north.

There is one problem with the road - when there is a diversion for any reason - the suggested alternative routes can be a bit 'hairy'!  We were diverted on to one near Lodeve last year!

Thank you all for your advice - very much appreciated. We will use this road next week on the way south.
