hmmm, there are dozens of headline price comparison sites, but none that meaningfully compare the significant benefits/exclusions in detail. You can't even assume 2 green flag policies are the same! There also isn't anything that compares the performance of the outfits behind the brands - eg how do you know if AXA is as good as AA overseas or is Allianz as good as green flag? If you've broken down en route it will make quite a big differnce if you get stingy hire car/accommodation - especially if you break down on a Friday evening!
I did all this a couple of years ago - got as many 'small prints' as I possibly could, and trawled through them all, comparing 'like with unlike'. Size, restrictions, age of vehicle, who they used to provide the service, cost, etc., etc., (and believe me there are a lot of etceteras!) In the end we went for ADAC because it seemed to offer what we needed (though be aware it may not for others) at a price we thought reasonable. We're a mature couple, with adult 'towing' children, no end destination, no fixed 'have to be back by...... date' and so delays and staying somewhere else wouldn't bother us, nor do we need 'get you back home before............. in any and every circumstance'. However, if you want all the bells and whistles then there's no doubt you have to pay for it - and to be perfectly honest, if you're towing, only Red Pennant or the Caravanning and Camping Club's policy seems to offer this.
ADAC English documentation available here and here.
