Early last year I booked the Bilbao ferry and Aquarius camping. I then started to research campsites from Bilbao to Barcelona. I spent hours and to be honest found very few I would want to stay on. Haro is lovely (stayed there many years ago) but isn't far enough inland. A lot of the sites seem to be long term sites. I then tried hotels - again very few chains unlike in France. In the end I cancelled the ferry and we booked the Eurotunnel and drove to Aquarius staying at Novotels on the way down. It worked out a lot cheaper and quicker.

Aquarius is a lovely site - Hi Matt!! We spent 9 nights there and had a great time. The beach is fabulous. A couple of nights we had a BBQ on the beach in the dark which the children loved. I'm not really a beach fan but I was converted. The staff were lovely and the pastries in the shop (best shop on a campsite by far) were out of this world. The toilets etc were cleaned constantly by very nice staff.

The newer parts of the site are slightly exposed ie no trees to protect from the sun. You will need to ensure you take shade with you if you are pitched on the newer pitches.

It doesn't feel like a 'large' site. During the day it is very quiet and most people are on the enormous beach. There isn't a swimming pool so you don't really see lots of people all in one area. There is some entertainment but low key. Sometimes you can hear the disco from another site but that didn't bother us. My children were 7 and 10.

Have a great time.

Sounds lovely - Just one question, you mention bbq on the beach, I did ask them and they said bbq was fine but do you know if bbq at your tent is not allowed?

Compared with other sites in the area, camping Aquarius is a small site... however, it has 566 pitches. I just looked at the site map for Las Dunas, it has an incredible 4337 pitches.

Think you may have looked at the site map its 1700 pitches thereabouts but whilst for example we are on a pitch 3000 something there is loads of numbers missing   its just how they numbered it...

Yes I was looking at the site map. I did think that 4000+ looked a little strange! It is a big site though, even with just 1700 pitches

We stayed there 10 years ago, and really enjoyed it. We rented a mobile home, as I was trying to introduce my wife gently into camping.

Well remembered Matt!

I'm not surprised Aquarius is getting booked up for 2014 it is a lovely site.

Not 100% whether we will go yet in 2014, but paid for cancellation guarantee, at least it keeps our options open

I quite fancy doing lake Garda and Nice so that is a possible 2014 venue

This summer we're getting the ferry to Bilbao and staying in Camping La Paz in Asturias - a 2ish hour drive from the port. This site is not even listed on this website, but my parents stayed there with my younger siblings with Eurocamp 20 odd years ago. (Eurocamp no longer have a presence.) Its supposed to be a quiet campsite (no entertainment or pool) with pitches with amazing views over the sea and towards the mountains, toilets built into the rock, a cliff top restaurant and direct access to a sandy beach. I'm taking my two kids 10 and 7. I'll report back!

Greetings,

Then there's Camping Salata at Roses (just up the road from San Pere Pescador)

It's owned by one of the hotels on the front where you can get a good meal, 500mts to beach, there are loads of other places to eat and Roses itself, about 1500mts away is a 'proper' Spanish town that is open 12mths of the year.

Yes, it's a lovely site ... but at 60 euros a night for the four of us, it's priced itself out ..
Little cheaper with 'non-adult' kids ... I'm sure you'll love the area ... we're addicts!
