Do people buy a PAYG Sim in France or just use UK phones? Just for keeping in touch. so would be a France to France mobile call and a bit of surfing.
Looks like we should be OK from next year when UK bundles are valid in the EU - 'bout b****y time too!

French pay&go sims & calls are dearer than UK pay&go deals so unless you intend to make a large amount of calls within France then it is cheaper to use your UK phone with complete understanding of what you are doing at all times. For example it costs only 7p/min to receive calls from UK with no extra cost to your UK caller so get them to phone you rather than you phone them for 24p/min. Also if you phone anybody & no answer ring off before they go on answerphone because thats 24p even if you ring straight off afterwards.
I don't use data meself but it appears to cost £1.99 per day, for how much, I know not but most cafes etc have free wifi so thats what most people do I think. If you want to do a lot of internet most campsites have wifi that you can pay for & probably cheaper & certainly less hassle than buying a French dongle.
If you do want a French sim etc you will find that there are staff that speak English to advise you in most phone shops in tourist areas.
Provider is Orange, would of thought you could get a good deal in France, as they are owned by France Telecom, but alas no.

The idea was to ring person to person in France, not people back in the UK, heck we're on holiday, why would we want to call people back in the uk

The pricing is complicated and almost designed to get round the rules. The EU has set maximum call charges but O2 charge you £1.99 a day without data and then 50p connection charge for each call to the UK.
We were in France in February with 3 different networks between us - vodafone, O2 and T mobile and vodafone was far and away the best deal for our needs. £3 a day and everything used came out of your normal data/ call allowance. No charge for days you didn't use it.
The EU have set maximum per minute call charges within the member countries so I don't understand how a UK network could make a daily charge unless they were allowing you to use your UK allowance in Europe?

O2 with stardard pay&go sim used in EU countries the charge 28p/min to make calls, 7p/min recieve & 8p to text, free to recieve text.
If you are on pay monthly with O2 by default you are on O2 travel which charges 50p connection but then gives you an hours talk for no extra charge which may suit some. Pay monthly users can opt out by texting notravel to 23336 & then you revert to standard EU roaming charges as with pay&go users.

If youre on a site with free WIFI then bung Skype or Voipstunt on your phone or tablet or laptop and call the UK at 1P per minute
... or if you get your landline from BT use BT Smart Talk to make calls on your landline free call allowance.
We've got Smart Talk on our phones, plus Skype, so using the site's wi-fi is another option. Sods law though, we'll be in the middle of Bordeaux or somewhere and loose each other, requiring a *normal* call.

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it
