Beeny, we found the campsites very good on the whole.  We're not keen on massive all-singing, all-dancing sites, and quite a lot of the ones on the Istrian coast are like that, but there are plenty of small-to-medium sites once you head down the coast towards Dalmatia.  There are plenty of sites on the islands too.  We stayed in one on Krk island, which is easy to get to via a bridge, but met several people who'd got ferries and camped on Rab or Pag.  That's easier if you have a motorhome or tent.
