As others have said, no problem. There used to be one difficulty insofar as the Passport Office wanted your old one back before they issued the new one. If this was done close to the departure date and, for instance, there were postal delays, there was the possibility that you would end up with no passport at all. If you renew a few months before departure you would have no trouble. Equally, I think, should you be delayed returning on your dates, you shouldn't have problems getting an extension from a Consul - if you can find one!
