Personally I would renew your passport early - as the 'remaining amount' is added on to your new passport.

So if your passport expires on the 16th June and you renewed on the 16th April the extra two months would be added to your new one, which would run for ten years and two months.

As others have said, no problem. There used to be one difficulty insofar as the Passport Office wanted your old one back before they issued the new one. If this was done close to the departure date and, for instance, there were postal delays, there was the possibility that you would end up with no passport at all.  If you renew a few months before departure you would have no trouble.

Equally, I think, should you be delayed returning on your dates, you shouldn't have problems getting an extension from a Consul - if you can find one!
