Did a trip to Germany about 8 yrs ago -same ferry crossing. Can't say what the sites we stayed at would be like now but we enjoyed it. We were caravaners then but both sites had good tent pitches.
Whole trip started out around visit to the Huf house village in Westerwald (Huf is a fancy kit house and village is a collection of show houses for those who are wondering) and then went down to Black Forest (still dreaming of owning a Huf house - keep buying the lottery ticket in the hope of ever being able to afford one)
Did stop over on way - on Rhine (to allow to go to the Huf village ) - stayed on a campsite at Langstein (south of Koblenz) bit of a steep climb up a hill to site but brilliant views of Rhine and watching the river traffic and main train line far down below - felt we were like the Lorelai which was only a bit further down the valley. Site brill location - facilities adequate for short stop and there was a municiple lido complex adjacent. Good local shops and food supplies in Langstein - enjoyed it much better than Rhudesheim area which was a bit too touristy for our liking to stay at.
In Black Forest stayed at Kirchzarten site - again municiple lido adjacent. Site very large and small pitches and large but extremely large clean shower complex which never got stretched - we had a pitch with back to the outer wall of the site so did not feel too crowded. It did not have any statics but some were seasonal pitches - obviously used in Winter time for skiers going to Tittersee as well as for summer. lots of different nationalities there. What was good was the free train pass on local trains and used this to go to Freiburg. The village had a couple of good hotels and bakers etc. We were out and about most of the day and toured a large part of the region from there including the Bodensee.
On way back stop over near Njimyagen in Holland so easy jaunt on last day to Rotterdam. Would recommend Masstrich for a visit/stop over - Pied Piper of Hamlyn comes to mind.
Enjoy your trip
Half planning a trip to Cote d'Azur next year but Switzerland and Austria are calling - think it will be much more our scene.
