We are taking 3 weeks to drive down via Chunnel, Strasboug into Italian Lakes, Venice,Pisa,Florence,Monaco and back up through France! Anyone done similar?? And is it necessary to book sites? We would like to be free to move as we wish and use some aires but don't want to be site less due to it being busy everywhere!!!

Only thing I would say about using Aires, is that if you want to be sure of a place on a popular Aire you need to arrive by about 3pm. The best ones fill up very quickly - and our experience was out of season.
Round the Italian Lakes it was very busy and some sites were full, but there are plenty of sites, and even in peak season during school holidays we found one.
For Venice, there was plenty of space on Lido De Jesolo, we stayed by Punta Sabbione, which was handy for water buses into Vemice.

We did Germany ... then Venice, Florence, Pisa, Sienna etc and back via Monaco and into France to Die for two weeks, then home last year.
If you look at my reviews you'll see info on camping in Venice and Tuscany ...
