We want to do Dover to Calais next year in our MH and see where we get to. We want to take our dog. Can anyone give me any tips on rules and regulations please? Also any tips generally regarding taking the dog would be great. Thanks.

Hi there,

Pet passport, dog chipped, up to date boosters/worming and rabies jab at least 21 days before you travel.   Coming back from the EU see a vet 1 to 5 days before the crossing for administering worming and stamping the passport.

That is about it..

Thanks. Dog is chipped and we have her vaccinated annually. Do you get the pet passport from the vets? Is it just a question of getting her to the vet at least 21 days before we go?

Go to the vets as soon as you if she has not had a Rabies jab, some dogs, very few I believe, can have a reaction to the vaccine.

Yes, the vet does the rabies vaccine and can then issue the pet passport necessary to travel abroad (and more importantly, home again!)

If you choose Eurotunnel, the dog stays with you on the journey, on a regular ferry, the dog stays in the vehicle too, but you have to go to the passenger decks. Dover Calais or Dunkirk will be approx one and a half or two hours respectively, you will know how the dog will cope with that.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to call in at the vets today. I'm pretty sure our dog would be fine on the Dover to Calais crossing on her own in the MH. She's a very chilled dog

We did D/Calais loads of times with our dog, she was a good traveller too. Was always asleep when we got back to the van after the ferry journey, and would look at us like ' you just woke me up!!'

You will be welcomed in most bars and restaurants in France with a dog,but not in supermarkets of course. If you are able to use Camping Cheques,dogs are free. Note that some sites can charge up to 4 euros a night for a dog,so check first.If you are travelling to the South mention it to your vet (sandfly)

Prior to travelling it is important to administer a spot on treatment such as frontline plus (we use Advantix) to prevent mossies and sandflies from giving your dog Leishmaniosis. Our vet warned us about it last year and the vet we visited in the Ardeche in early July was most concerned that we had treated for this as it is an increasing problem.
