Here's the plan - please could someone who has more experience than us have a look at it and comment?
AA route planner gives drive time to Folkestone as 3hrs 50 mins. Adding the usual contingency we're setting out at 6:00 am (on a Sunday) and getting to the Eurotunnel at around 11:00 am.
Allow say two hours to cross, (we will book a more accurate time slot but we do love our contingency)gets us into Calis at around 14:00 (French time).
Then we're heading down to Millau / Tarn Gorge, which we know is not doable in a single run with any expectation of sane children.
Currently looking at breaking the journey around Orelans after a second (AA route plan) drive of 3 hrs 55 mins. Call it 6 hours (extra contingency for France).
Does this plan make enough sense?
Anyone know a good (cheap) hotel for an overnight in Orleans?
We will be camping when we get to the Tarn but don't want all the up and down of a quick overnight camp.
Thanks

It looks doable to me - but it's a very long day. Are you sure you'll still be up to driving after more than twelve hours on the journey? There are any number of budget hotels in Orleans, and you can use booking.com to find the combination of rooms that you require for the number of adults and children.
We travel from Manchester to just south of Millau every year. We are a party of 4 - 2 adults and 2 children (now aged 15 and 12). We always do it in a single run but we travel overnight.
We set off from Manchester at 09.00 on Friday, stopping for lunch on the way and having a meal in Folkestone before we get the Eurotunnel around 18.30. We arrive in Calais around 20.00 (French time) and then drive through the night - stopping every few hours for a quick break - arriving in Auvergne around 04.00 on Saturday morning. We sleep until around 07.00 and then have breakfast before we set off again. We stop for a good long lunch break and arrive at our destination around 14.00.
It is all about planning, taking it slowly and making sure we have plenty of stops. The children have DVDs in the back of the car and, because we are travelling overnight, bed down and sleep.
We have done this for the last three years and it works for us.
Good luck with your trip.

I have just come back from a Trip to Millau, Staying at Camping la Cascade
We Left from Somerset 23:00 Friday night, and arrived at Dover in time to get the 4am Ferry (we were booked on the 6 am to Dunkerque)
We then drove down leisurely to Auxerre, where we stayed in the Premiere Classe overnight (was going to stay at Troyes but accommodation was unavailable or expensive)
The next day we continued again leisurely down to Millau.
On the way back we stayed at Les Rives to Lac at Veynes for a week (via a Night in near Montpelier on Route) before stopping off at Troyes overnight before getting the ferry back to Calais.
I am not sure whether we to an orthodox or recognized route, but it was an enjoyable drive and worked for us.
Cheers
Nathan

There is a brilliant hotel in bourges, about 1 hour south of Orleans. The ibis style, formerly all seasons hotel. It has a family room set on 2 levels and will sleep 5. It costs about 100 euro and includes a fantastic breakfast. Given your timings, you should be able to get there by 8 pm without a problem
Many of the contributors to this excellent site suggest a slow run through France, however, it is very much a personal choice. Loads of people get down to clermont Ferrand in a single go, so Orleans or Bourges is harly pushing it hard
Thanks for all your replies. We did get down to Le Vigan last year with 2 overnight stops but Val mentioned that she did the whole trip with 1 overnighter so we thought we'd give it a go.
Kids are 18, 17 and 12 and all get on really well so no worries there.

If I'm perectly honest we actually have two overnights. We have a 7.30 am start from near Abbeville, which gives us an extra seven hours or so of driving time before you arrive in France at 2.00 pm, so at almost the end of our first day you're just setting off from Calais. We don't usually drive much after 3.00 to 4.00 pm except on our way home when we may do a longer day.
This year we're staying overnight with our son in London and getting an early ferry and then plan to get to Chateauroux for the first night.
We are also driving to the Costa Brava next month (well I am anyway being the only driver). We'll drive to folkestone which takes us about 4 hours from where we live. Following the crossing we'll be aiming for Orleans where we have a hotel room booked (this usually takes us 5 hours ish dependant on stops). We then get up about 6, set off around 7 to arrive at campsite around teatime. It will be interesting to see how we get on this year as we may have to do more comfort stops as hubby is recovering from a series of operations latest one only 2 weeks ago but we're determined to go after missing our May holiday. It just can't come quick enough for me

Bentondeep, from Calais, you should be OK to get to Clermont Ferrand by 9pm (depending on traffic / towing etc). in 2010 and 2011 we did Clermont Ferrand, arriving in Le Harvre at 12:45 - about 1:30 once on route, we stopped for late lunch at Dreux, and arrived in Clermont Ferrand around 7:30pm
If you allow 2 hours extra journey from Calais, I guess that you will be off the Ferry by 1pm
We have done home(Bedfordshire) to bourges in a day with a ferry crossing and was a long day but perfectly doable -we used the Hotel les TIlleuls in bourges which was good as it had large rooms for 4 or 5 people so may suit

We are off to the costa brava in 2 weeks.
Planning to set off from sheffield at around 3:30 - 4:00am in time for the ferry from dover to calais at 10:15.
Then hoping to get as far as clermont ferrand by 9:00pm.
I have booked a hotel in bourges also just in case we cant do it.
Wish me luck.
We done this journey last Thursday/Friday, we got the 6am ferry to Dunkirk and we got to Clermont Ferrand by 4.30pm. We went via Rouen and was doing average 60 -65mph. So you should be able to get to C/F for your stop over.
