Hi

Last year, on good advice from this site, we went on a last minute holiday to the Tarn Gorge and loved it. We were planning to go back this year.

Last year, we stayed in Le Vigan and thought we had to drive a long way to anything we wanted to do because we just picked the first campsite and went with that.

So this year we're trying to use Trip Advisor and AA routeplanner to see what we want to do and look at the drive times.

We were hoping to stay at the Le Rozier site but most of what we've found to do on Trip Advisor is at least a couple of hours drive away.

We enjoyed canoeing, gorges and caves last time and we'd like to do more of the same this year but with cycling.

Please can anyone advise where to stay in France?

Thanks.

You can canoe in the Tarn from any sites in Le Rozier, there is spectacular geology all around you, and the route along the Gorge du Tarn, Gorge du Jonte, and Gorge du Dourbie from Millau is excellent cycling (as long as you avoid the routes up the sides of the gorge.  Then there is spectacular wildlife, with beaver in the river, vultures in the sky overhead, and bee eaters around every corner.  You've also got the historical villages of the Knights Templars, with walled villages such as La Couvertoirade, Ste Eulalie de Cernon, and many others.

What about the Ardeche area, again with canoeing on the Ardeche and the Chassezac, and swimming/messing about in canoes at La Beaume, geology (lots of basalt cliffs as well as the spectacular gorges and caves), and cycling along the routes alongside the river.  The Ceze (another lovely river) is near enough but different enough - and then there are the Roman parts of Nimes which may interest you and the flatter cycling country between the Ceze and Nimes.  Then you're also near enough for a drive down into the Camargue or into the Drome across the Rhone Valley from the Ardeche.

What 'must sees' have you identified on trip advisor??  Perhaps a site central to all of them might be the best bet.

Thanks for all that info Val.

My husband is going to have a good look at that in a bit.

No 'must sees' really. We just ran something like 'Languedoc Roussillon'attractions search through the Trip Advisor list pulling out cycle hire stuff caves and canoeing. They all seemed to be quite a drive away though.

Last year, we did canoe on the Tarn but as we were staying in Le Vigan the drive meant it was the same time as driving from Cardiff to London!

My husband has also found a Velorail du Larzac which sounds a bit of bonkers fun.
