Just back from a stay in SP in the Dordogne. Had a great stay but one morning there was a snake found on the pitch 2 up from ours. The staff dealt very quickly with it and with little fuss.
Got me wondering anyone had a problem with snakes in France and any advice to avoid being the pitch they might visit next year.
Give me angry mozzies any day - I hate snakes!!
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
We don't live far from the Dordogne and we see snakes in the garden every year. Always wear my wellies if I'm going into the longer grass. We try and keep the grass cut short to as protection for the cat and dog.
As said most are non venomous but we see vipers most years. We have a lot of the large green lizards which supposedly feed on young snakes.
Of course 'slow' worms are also very common which look like snakes but are a lizard.
If it has a round pupil then it is non venomous BUT if it has a SLIT PUPIL it is venomous. See here..French Snakes
Really appreciate the link - I can cope with most things and am reasonably adventurous but I'm a complete coward when it comes to snakes.
Not sure what type of snake was in the campsite. Apparently the people who's site it was discovered on said it had yellow markings on it and the campsite staff said it was very vicious but harmless.
Thanks again for the information - I'm never leaving my boots in the awning again!!

That seems to fit the description Crach. To be honest I was going no where near it. I heard the initial shout from one of the people on the site about the snake and noticed very quickly there was a lot of people over offering advice.
I did have a look around our own pitch at that point thankfully didn't see nor did I want to see any of its friends.
Thanks again for your link and enlightening me more. Like I said before give me mozzies any day.
Just to point out that should you be bitten by a Grass Snake, prevalent in the UK, you should always seek medical attention. The snake has so much crud on their teeth that the bite site will become infected - probably because they don't use Colgate or something like that
I have seen a shedded snake skin whilst on holiday in the Charente region - it was quite long.
This week we were in the Loire - the owner of the property said to wear long trousers if we went into the woods surrounding the gardens as there were snakes.
