Hubby has said that there were 20 mile tailbacks today. Can't see anything about it on news can anyone shed any light? We are due to set off at 6.30 tomorrow for an early pm Chunnel.

It appears to be on the anti-clockwise section on the approach to the tunnel (not the bridge).

link

Whoops - just realised the anti-clockwise works are a few days off yet - still the link has a full list of what roadworks to expect.

Hi I can see the bridge from my home there is no telling's what it can be like one minute it's fine next it's chaos around here slightest bump at the bridge causes havoc. Just allow plenty of time tailbacks are very common but it could be perfectly clear. Good Luck give us a wave as you go over the bridge

I'll be crossing in 3 weeks but I don't think you'll want a wave at 4 in the morning - I always travel down overnight to ensure no delays on the M25.

Also means I'm in the Loire and pitched by early afternoon.

Friday afternoon is the worse time to travel south on the Dartford bridge, for some reason there are always tailbacks, and its easy to see why. Simply the tolls cant cope with the volume of traffic.

There are often hold-ups at the crossing, which is why I originally asked that there could be a 'pinned' topic.  It would help if those going through over the next few days report their experiences there - but I'm afraid that at the end of the day, you either have to sit and wait, or risk the Blackwall tunnel - which can be even worse sometimes!

Welshwynn is correct - the toll booths can't cope with the volume of traffic.  We did read, somewhere, that it was going to become 'electronic' collection sometime in the future, but quite how that will work I'm not sure.

Val A,

I think it's going to work the same as the London Congestion Charge.

Registration plate (Number plate) will be recorded and the onus will be on the motorist to pay in good time (or get fined).

I belive it's coming in late next year.

Andy

As per an earlier thread and the reported preference of truckers using the M25, we travelled anticlockwise from the M40 rather than the usual clockwise off the M1. No guarantees of course, but we had no problems at all there last week. In fact we had more bother getting past a large tractor in Beynac yesterday!

Yes ANPR will come in next year you will get billed unless you are foreign as it stands they won't have to pay, this is causing a big stink seeing as we have to pay at foreign tolls!

Every day on our local radio there are hold ups at the Blackwall tunnel and approach roads, personally would avoid it like the plague.

We use the Dartford crossing on a fairly regular basis and generally dont have a problem. It is very much luck of the draw as Scooby40 says one bump or breakdown and havoc.

Just keep fingers crossed

Best time to tackle Dartford Bridge and Tunnel is between 10pm and 6am when it is Free so no build up at tollgates.

I didn't know that, but that is ludicrous! So all those foreign lorries which come over get the crossing for free, yet those of us with UK numberplates do pay.

It'd be nice if France and other countries with tolls had the same arrangement, make their own people pay, but let foreigners go free
