We are taking our dog to France for the fist time(first time ever for us to take a dog!!). We crossing via the Channel Tunnel and travelling through France to Bilbao (return on boat). We have been trying to find a vet either south of Bordeaux in Basque region of France or in northern Spain near Bilbao. Can any members recommend an English speaking vet please?

thanks

Most vets in France speak enough English or perhaps have been through the passport procedure so many times that language is not often an issue. Just show your dogs passport and everybody will understand what is required.

One of the regular contributors on Trip Advisor has made a list and map of all places where this can be done (as far as he knows): Vets for European Passport

Steve, try what we did. We just went in to the local tourist office and asked about vets. They were really helpful, knew exactly what we required, and found us one close to our campsite. They even made an appointment on our behalf. The vet spoke perfect English as well.

Simples!

June. Thanks we will bear that one in mind. However as this the first time we have taken a dog we would rather book and be safe. May be next time we will do as you say as I always found when motorhoming that it is better to take it as it comes rather than booking and rushing!!

Cheers

Your campsite will more than likely have a list of Vets on the same list as Doctors,Dentists, etc., and may well book an appointment for you if you ask.

I agree with Val. We took our Springer to the Ardeche June /July. We asked at the campsite reception and they gave the name and address of a vet where we could turn up, no appointment necessary. We take our own wormers with us as they are expensive in France. The vet will scan and read the microchip, do a full health check as well as give your wormer. They will then fill in two sections of the passport to show that it has been wormed and is fit to travel.
Regards Bob.

I've taken my dog three times to France, my friend who is French books the vet for us, twice the vet could speak English but the first time the vet spoke no English and we managed fine.

I usually time my chap's annual check up a few weeks before we go so he can check the chip is still working and in the same area, on the way back into UK it is the pet owners responsibility to check the chip, doing this before leaving the UK gives me peace of mind.
