In Italy, six years ago ... my daughter had a bad cycle accident ... ambulance to hospital ... majot mouth operation ... in for two days .. no paperwork requested ... no charges whatsoever ... incredible service ... first class results!
Year before last ... requiring AF Tests: Germany: no costs, Italy: no costs, France: had to be done by a local clinic, small charge ... however, a SRN visited me twice at the campsite to a. set up and b. follow up ... no charge. HIC card was only flashed in France .... nowhere else required anything except my home treatment paperwork file.

Does anyone know what a private hospital would be called in France and Spain as opposed to a state hospital? Is there a word to look out for? Obviously the simple H sign is not sufficient to tell you when you are on the way.
We always carry our EHIC. Have never had to use it, but maybe one day will.
You always know when you are in a private hospital, first thing they ask for is your credit card. Once they have swiped that they can charge you anything they like. In French towns look for signs to 'centre hospitalier' for public hospital.
So can we no longer get these cards renewed at our Post Office any more ?
I was taken I'll in nice and all the Hospital needed after I'd received excellent treatment was to photocopy my EHIC card. no interest in my travel insurance whatsoever. About 3 months later I received a bill and as I had notified my travel. Insurers of my illness to check they would still cover me, I simply sent them the bill. As our travel insurance is covered by our bank, The Co-op,we don't pay for it anyway so my £50 excess seemed a small price to pay for the EXCELLENT care I received....a scan at 2 am!!! If you are going to have a TIA(mini stroke) I advise you to go to nice for it for the care and attention !!!

No need to go to a post office, you can apply in minutes on line, but as mentioned in a number of earlier posts, make sure you're using the official website!
