Hi

Having camped in France a couple of times (Reims and Loire) we are looking at taking our trailer tent further south and fancy the Dordogne. We like lively and fairly big sites so we can make use of the facilities but we also like to be able to be withing walking distance of a town if we fancy something different for an evening. As yet I am unable to find such a combination, it seems the bigger sites like St Avit or Soleil Plage are a few kilometres from anywhere yet sites like Port de Limeuil where you can walk into the village are smaller.
Are we asking too much to have both as I appreciate the Dordogne is a rural area, yet when we are looking at going for 2 weeks a bit of variety would be nice.
Any advice is greatly appreciated - even if its a completely different region to consider. Thank you.

Just back from Le Capeyrou. Pool, 120 pitches, nice bar with wi-fi, various events, good base for the area, and easy walk in to Beynac for restaurants etc.

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it

Have a look here
Beaulieu sur Dordogne

Beautifully compact, against town walls and good river activities

Go east from Beaulieu and you see a different aspect of the Dordogne river as you go into the Massif Centrale and you will find the deep gorges and the many dams providing lots of the Hydro Electricity of France.

We also would like a site that you can walk into a town, we went to Port de Limueul last year . It was a lovely site, very quiet and peaceful but there isn't a restaurant and the bar area was empty. (But we went in May half term) . The town is quiet too, there are about 3 restaurants and when we went just 2 shops open.
This year we wanted a bit more lively and slightly more for the children to do so we have chosen Les Peneyrals, on the grounds that it has a few pools, restaurant and evening music /bands. But it isn't walkable to a town. We go on Monday !
We went to look at Le Capeyrou and think its a lovely site , and Beynac is such a great place to walk into, beautiful and lots of choice for eating out etc . We didn't book it as wanted a site with different pools and slides for the kids . But it does look fab .
Good luck finding somewhere.
