Arrived at SP on Monday, came in through Vitrac which was ok(ish) but I'm concerned about heading back and the narrowness of the road with cliff-face on the same side.

Has anyone used the road to Sarlat via Montfort (the one to get to L'Eclerc) to get out of the immediate vicinity? It looks ok, based on a drive to get some shopping.

We're heading to the vendee next, so we're not sure if there is another way to go, rather than through Vitrac. The wife was having kittens on the way here...

Thanks

I've asked that question several times and nobody has ever said it's a problem

but nobody has ever supported the idea either

It looks the best option to me - even with the very slow section passed the sports stadium

Was at the SP in July and faced the same problem. I considered going to the next village Carsac past Monfort and then heading for Sarlat.

I didn't like the road to the left just after Monfort as I though there were a few too many trees with low branches.

In the end I took the route past the overhanging cliff, and it worked out fine.

I took the D703 from carsac through montfort, then turned left about a mile before Vitrac. Not great but done worse. Going via sarlat is a few miles extra. Think I'll go the same route back.

I have towed both ways and on balance prefer the Vitrac approach. You just have to be a bit careful on the final section where the road narrows (even more) . Take it slowly and you should be fine. Going via Vitrac also brings you out on a better road into Sarlat.

I had the same problem last week, with Mrs T not fancying the cliffs. I encountered a coach coming the other way a couple of days prior to departure and if I had been towing there was no way past. I therefore took the L'Eclerc route and it was much better. As DK says, take it easy either way.

Don't worry about the overhanging cliffs, just drive down the middle of the road and flash at oncoming cars like the French do!!!

We are here at the moment too, leaving this Friday but will be heading in the other direction through Carnac.

We use the road to Sarlat from Montfort, turn out of SP right til you see the Sarlat sign to go left 3kms, take this route its easier and takes you to Leclerc, its a smallish road but better than the overhanging cliffs! Weve done that way twice with no probs.

Thanks Cheryl. We've been that way to the supermarket twice now and didn't see anything that would cause concern.

On the bright side, I'm planning on leaving at 8am on Sunday, so there's not likely to be much traffic whichever way I go.

We left last year at 8am and got to Dunkirk by tea time, had a good run all the way there and this year we have done a second site an hour away from SP in the Lot geronne region (gorgeous) and again we left last Sat at 8.30am and arrived at Dunkirk for tea time and stayed over night at the Port.
Weve had no problems with traffic at all this year even round Paris apart from UK from Dover, M25 horrendous!!
Iv started planning next years trip. We all loved SP this year but want a change next year as weve done Dordogne 3 yrs now so time for a change. That route is so much easier and I think once you reach the roundabout at Lecerc turn right where the cycle path is and you follow the road that way towards the motorway (I think?)
You will find it a lot easier than the mountain rds as I hate that route its scary but scenic!
Have a good trip back, im soo jealous and wish we were still there :-(
