Ok, so I have a few (read a lot!) of questions about camping in France. I have trawled the reviews section but figured I may get more help if I actually ask for help.
Please be gentle I'm new
We are looking to go to France for 2 weeks in August 2014. There is me (32) Mr F (33) and 3 boys (3, 6 & 8)
We would like to drive about 5 or 6 hours from Calais.
Ideally a pool/water park and some kid type entertainment. (non-speedo enforcement would be a plus for Mr F but frankly not going to influence my decision one bit!)
I would love to be close to a river rather than a beach (although the coast is fine too) and we all love canoeing/kayaking.
An area with some of the French style smaller theme parks would be great (similar to enchanted village, festyland etc. in Normandy)
The Vendee has been recommended to us as one option?
Lastly we are towing a Conway challenger, any ideas on the best/cheapest way to cross. So far it looks like DFDS is about £140 return.
Ok I think that just about covers it (for now)
Thanks in advance

Hi. all that west coast of France is good for kids of that age - either the Vendee or a bit further south beyond La Rochelle called Charente Maritime. Our little ones learned to swim in warm shallow water at La Palmyre - and we still love that area more than the Vendee which is a bit further north
Of course your cheapest ferry will be from Dover, but that leaves you with about 450 miles to drive on the French side - can you do that in a day from Calais? The dearer ferries from Portsmouth to Caen or St Malo will cost you more but cut the mileage. Your choice.
Theme parks I don't know about, and there aren't really canoe/kayak rivers in that flat part of France. Fancy campsites are aplenty if you want them, but when we had kids the same age of yours we had very little money to spare, and we had to stay at simpler sites without pools and the children played on the beach. Your choice again. But either way it's good holiday country for a young family. Good wishes.
Lac D'Orient in Champagne would fit, lake not river though. Nigloland theme park about 20mins / half hour drive away.
Cheapest crossing will be Dover-Calais/Dunkirk, look for special offer with DFDS in October when caravan show's on, can't remember if I paid £59 or £69 return last year with car and trailer tent. However if you're planning on the Vendee for your hols it's longer than 5-6 hrs from Calais and one of the more expensive crossings would be nearer.
we live 20 minutes from dover so driving to Portsmouth would add more miles this end of the journey and Mr F would definitely drive further in France than here!
We have been to the Dordogne, stayed in a villa near Bordeaux which was about 8 hours drive from Calais, although towing it would take a lot longer! We had a 10 month old, a 4 year old and a nearly 6 year old and just about managed without killing each other in one day. Hopefully 5-6 hours will be more bearable (slightly)
We have canoed in the Dordogne and Normandy, we are not talking hard core rapids, just a few hours along rivers with a pick up at the end. It is an activity we enjoy but not essential.
Perhaps a beach within walking distance would be better than a water park, we don't need all singing all dancing sites but want the boys to be able let off steam and have fun.
I will look into these suggestions and maybe forget Vendee (mother in law swears it was only 4 hours from Calais when they used to go, what! they've obviously moved it )
Have a good look at the Marais Poitevin area ... known as the 'Green Venice' .... it's flat, and laced with canals of all sorts of sizes and widths .... boating, canoeing is done a lot, and there are lots of bike trails and places to hire boats or bikes if you don't take your own. I've done three hours kayaking and two hours biking to-day ... the weather is terrific all week ...
I'm at a municipal in Arcais, which is brilliant value ... there are several sites in the area .... 'La Venise Verte' near Coulon (great small town) has a pool.
It's a relatively undiscovered area by the british ... but well worth it .... this is my third visit in ten years.
Puy du Fou is reckoned to be the biggest adventure/spectacle park in France ... and is accessible from here, too.

Beaches and La Rochelle an easy drive for outings.
If you are planning on using DFDS then they usually produce a promotional code which is usable for the duration of the camping shows held at the NEC. The next one is 15 - 20 October. It is only obtainable at the show, but some kind soul usually posts it on this forum during the week of the show.
The Vendee is defo a 7-8 hour drive. We have done it in one but without les enfants - and a good tail wind.
Why not make a short stop-over half-way, as a mini-treat?
The Beaumont sur Sarthe area has some great municipals for this kind of thing. I have family in Dover, and stop overnight before going to France, so we're in a similar situation distance-wise to you.
The resorts of Jard sur Mer/Tranche sur Mer may be up your street. You can get to Puy de Fou from there, also Venise Vert, La Rochelle, Sables d'Olonnes (ooh another idea) and all the beaches and cycle paths around. Have a look at the reviews and see if anything goes ping for you. L'Oceano d'Or at Jard, and Camping Bel at Tranche seem popular spots for families, but there are lots more to check out!
Can second Camping Bel in La Tranche. Fantastic location with the town, beach and supermarket all within walk able distance. Lots of places to visit in surrounding area such as La Rochelle and Noirmoutier.

We've just got back from le pin parasol, in the Vendee next to a lac which you could canoe on. We overnighted in ashford, got a 7:20am euro tunnel and arrived at the site (towing) at 18:15. It was a long day (id only got 3hrs sleep which wont have helped) and in the future we will probably get a western crossing or overnight in France (however Portsmouth and Folkestone are equidistance for us). When we arrived at the site I felt the.journey had been worth it tho I would prefer not to do it that way in the future,
------------- From tents to trailer tents to a tin tent to an air tent to trailer tent and back to tin tent!
As kate w said, Lac d'Orient near Troyes would fit most of what you are after. Took us just over 4 hours from Dunkerque (non towing) so you should manage it easily in 5/6 hours towing. Lovely shower block and indoor and outdoor pools. Bar/restaurant leaves a bit to be desired but there are a couple of really nice places within walking distance.
Nice lake beach directly across the road from the site. As a photo can be worth a lot of words I am attaching a few for you OP of the site and the lake.
