I have been camping in Montalivet on and off for the last 40 years. After visiting this year and last we are now considering a change!

My wife however limits the choice somewhat. She will not swim in a river or a lake, only the sea. We are booked on the St Malo crossing for next year and I thought we may head a little further south.

I have found this campsite in Mimizan. www.camping-laclairiere.fr It looks like it would suit us but I cant find any reviews. Firstly does anyone have any first hand experience of Mimizan? Is it a nice relaxed beach resort like Montalivet?

Also does anyone suggest any other campsites or towns. We like a pool, but prefer a smaller, quiet site, perhaps a short drive inland from the beach.

Any advice would be great!

Hi haven't been to Montalivet but have been to Mimizan on several occasions not stayed there but visited the beach for the day which is lovely. The town has lots of surf type shops and plenty of restaurants and bars, haven' t been there at night so can' t comment on that. Does get busy during high season but always managed to park nearby to the beach. Just up the road is the seaside resort of Biscarosse which is smaller and has lots of small campsites close to the beach.

I would head further South than Mimizan. Personally we find Mimizan a bit crowded and there is the smell of the paperworks that can be quite pervasive. Biscarosse is nice for a day but again a bit too busy. However if that is what you like then it will be fine.

We spend a lot of time at Contis Plage and Cap de l'homy. Inland towns of St Julien en Born and Lit et Mixe have a couple of camp sites too. These are all laid back places that even in the height of summer are not over crowded.

That sounds much better for us. I will do some research. Thanks
