We have been back to Vendee again this year with lovely beaches and a fantastic smaller site, 60 pitches, we found last year (walkable to town and beach)
Two kids will be 9 and 7 when we sort next year hols don't want big sites with entertainment etc but do want beach or river access for swimming lounging by

What other areas should we try, ideally no more than say 500 miles or so max from Calais ie one overnight we if towing

Over to you please :)

What about a bit further south, around Les Mathes area or Royan. Excellent cycle path network, beautiful beaches and good weather.
There are loads of sites.

If we could combine the Vendee beaches with the climate and inland scenery of the south-west, we'd never go anywhere else.

Back to reality. Lake Annecy is a contender for us for 2015. Google says 524 miles from Calais.

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it

Mike you have hit it on the head for us. With young kids the fab beaches on Vendee are a big draw. We haev been (not camping) to Charente and Cognac/Bordeaux areas and love the climate there but a beach is a big draw at their ages!

Will check out Lake Annecy area - thanks

Have a look at Lac d'Orient. The campsite is opposite the lake. Large emplacements - small indoor pool and lovely outdoor pool. Also very easy journey from Calais

Yes this is probably an option on list as we have been to La Rochelle / La Palmyre area before and liked it

Any specific recommendations Warbis for smaller sites in area - as you say there are loads!?

We're looking round La Palmyre / Les Mathes...there are lots of sites, but none that just do it for me...we stayed at Sequoia Parc this year and it was a fab site, just a bit far out from the beaches...and the mossies were terrible!

Sorry i have only stayed at loree du bois but saw signs for lots of other sights, Atlantique Foret gets good reviews. Loree du bois was good but quite noisy and for that reason i think your younger children would not like it, however, it has excellent facilities and a really good park and pool.
Campingfrance has all the sites listed and is a good easy to use website.

Thank you Warbis appreciate the links and info - will start the research!

Veema I agree there a re a large number of huge sites in that area which we saw when down in la Palmyre area before we started camping, which don't appeal but the area itself was lovely and the climate generally fantastic and a few degrees warmer than further up in Vendee

I would argue that the Bay of Roses in Spain has beaches at least as nice as the Vendee, sea that is far warmer and calmer, water that is shallow enough to be safe for young kids and weather that is better than the South of France.

Scenery is stunning, the Pyranese and Volcanic National park no more than 45 minutes drive away, wonderful towns and lots of culture and history.

Camping Aquarius is a lovely site, with lots of trees, well tended flower beds and green spaces. It does have entertainment twice per week, however, it is low key very varied and high quality. Facilities are great, with immaculate washing and toilet facilities, play grounds, a nice shop and play area for older kids. It is a very safe site, and not an issue for a 7 and 9 year old to have a degree of freedom. It has direct access to the beach, which has very limited public access, so the beach is very uncrowded.

I know that Spain is a bit further than you are looking for (660 miles from Dieppe), it is not a difficult drive in 2 days, even towing a Caravan. In my opinion it is so much better than France for a family holiday

Hi Matt

Have followed your previous posts on this area and that site) and have indeed earmarked it on my favourites for future years.

Downsides were distance from Calais area ports (We live pretty near Essex / Kent borders) at over 750 miles (so looking at two overnighters each way) and pitch prices at over €60 a night I believe in the high season

One for future though as would like to try northern Spain as have only done southern areas on holidays and never camped there.
We may look at static or fixed tent if we did try it though as seems to be a better value option.

To throw in a curved ball - we had a fantastic time and weather in Normandy this year. I know it is a risk with the weather but we stayed at a great muncipal site in Courseulles sur Mer which was 15 mins walk to the town and five minutes to the beach. See reviews here- not just ours. It was about 27Euros per night (with hookup) and you can do it in a day from Calais.

We loved Atlantique Foret and its a very different site to most in the area which seem to be the large holiday park type. The weather was fantastic.
If you prefer more laid back sites and aren't too bothered about pools and entertainments then it's definitely worth considering. Its quite an open site set amongst pine trees. A lovely environment. We'll definitely be back.

Hywel thanks but looking further south and possibly doing a shorter break in half term in Normandie area again

I would be trying some of the sites around Millau, visited the gorge du tarn for the day and would have loved to be staying on some of the sites along the river. A tad over 500 from Calais
