Hi, we are looking to tow our caravan to the south of France next year, most likely stopping around Loire valley for a couple of days on the way down. For the south we are looking at sites which have a decent pool, close to the beach, the normal facilities for a family with 2 11 year old twins.
Please can anyone advise us on things to watch out for aswell as any good sites. It seems that some of the 3 star sites look equally as good if not better than the 4/5 star ones. Is there a reason for this?

Lower star rated sites may be as good as the higher rated sites depending on what facilities you are after.
The star ratings work on sites being audited and receiving points depending on things like the size of pitches, number of toilets/showers and other criteria. As well as some mandatory criteria a 3 star site has to achieve 183 points and a 5 star site 286 points. The 5 star site will need to have things like a sauna and steam room to get the extra points, which you may not be interested in.
I would recommend Camping Le Sabot in Azay Le Rideau for your Loire stay, it is a municipal site with a swimming pool next door which is free to campsite users, it is a five minute walk into the small village which has a chateau and plenty of restaurants etc.
Many thanks, both replies a real help. As long aswe have a pool, shop, close to the beach we are happy. We tend to travel round areas rather than sitting by a pool for a week or 2.
We are looking at more 3 star sites now. Amazing what you find when you look
