We are planning a half-term camping trip to Southern France.

So, late Oct into early Nov.

Planning to go Dover-Calais and break the journey in The Loire.

But interested in members' recommendations for a location in the south.

We'd like a beach nearby and don't want it too cold, but don't want to kill ourselves with a massive drive.

Anyone any experiences, good or bad?

I know the weather can be unpredictable, but any general guidance very welcome.

btw: taking our two boys 6,9

Many thanks,

Paul

The sea will be warm but whether any campsites are open is a different mater

That time of year you could have colder nights anywhere in France so EHU and a heater would be good equipment certainly!

I have been to Med in late October and daytime was lovely still but can be unpredictable as you say

Might be as well taking your chances in Vendee or Charente areas on West coast as less of a drive for a quick week at half term

I second Warbis66 comment re campsites being open. The large majority of French sites close before or at the end of September or rarely into October. Suggest you use the CampingFrance.com site and enter the dates and the areas you are thinking of visiting. Think you will be surprised at how many are closed at the time you want to go. Good luck with your search and agree with sunshinetours, an EHU and a heater would not just be good equipment but I feel essential.
John

Last year we stayed at a site in Sanary-sur-Mer, near Toulon, in mid-October.  The weather was mixed - some warm days, when people were still using the swimming pool, and some cool wet days.

As others have said there are few sites open past the end of September.  A few stay open until mid-November and there are a very small number that stay open all year, including one called Hotellerie de Plein Air at Six-Fours-les-Plages, also near Toulon.  We've also stayed (in winter) in all-year-round sites in Aix-en-Provence and Le Boulu, but neither were on a beach and had very limited facilities out of season.

It's a similar picture in the Vendee but according to the ACSI guide there are a couple on Ile d'Oleron that stay open to mid-November.

Further down the west coast, south of Biarritz, there's a nice site at Urrugne called Larrouleta, which is open all year.  It's not on a beach but not far away, and it has an indoor heated pool. I don't know what the weather would be like in October as we've only stayed in winter, on the way to/from Spain, when it was cold (but not uncomfortably cold.)  There are some good surfing beaches nearby.

Les Gros Joncs, Oleron, has a lovely indoor pool complex, and is on the beach. Ditto La Brande (though check their pool dates). We stayed at Gros Joncs one March, cycled into St Pierre a few times, swam a lot!

Tent or van?

I must say that I'm not sure I'd be wanting to haul my backside all the way to the Med, for a week, at that time of the year on the off-chance the weather might be okay.

We're going to the Netherlands at half term. We know it will be cold, but will be in a static, with heating, and there's plenty of stuff to do in bad weather there.

SoF is lovely in the summer, and very set up for summer activities/beach etc. Not sure there will be much around to entertain two gloomy 6 and 9 year old boys if you hit a week of freezing weather and rain.

We live in France and by the middle of October, the caravan has been put away for the winter. Camping will really be a bit hit and miss.

Think about a heated chalet/mobile home on a campsite, the prices would be really low at that time.

I don't think I'd want to tent camp in October either.   You might be lucky with a week of 'Indian Summer' but you may also have cold weather.  I was down staying with friends on the Cote d'Azur in October one year, and there was snow in the countryside just inland from them.  For the price of fuel getting down there you might find a cheap apartment in Southern Spain and some bargain flights

You can, however, use this website - Meteociel - to look at historical weather records and check out the average daily temperatures over the period you want to go, for many years of back records.
