love this thread,we have met so many of the know it all types,we usually have nicknames for most of our fellow campers, theres Mr Happy who never smiles,Mr Brumigen from Birmingham whose accent was so thick he could have been foreign,Mr Fagash who allways had a fag on and whose pitch was covered in dog ends when he left, mind you he was quite a handy bloke to have around after OH got a really bad sting from a portugese man of war and old fag ash told him the best way to stop the sting was to pee on it,good job I had some sting cream handy, but we laughed so much at how we could achieve his suggestion

When we bought our caravan it was 5 months old and the people we bought it from claimed it had never been used. They had tried to put up the awning in their garden, had had a major row and had given up on it.

We bought it, drove it to a campsite and set off to put it up. They had colour coded all the awning poles, but unfortunately they had got them wrong, which explained their fight, so it took a bit of time to fix it. An older man saw us clearly having some problems and came over to help. He hooked the awning pole into the rail, dropped it, it swung down and bang - a noticeable ding in the side of our new caravan. I advised very strongly that we weren't ready to put in the poles yet, but he still wanted to. I was getting ready to assert myself by running him off our pitch, physically if I had to, when his wife called him for his tea.

He probably still talks about the couple who wouldn't take his advice. I never looked at that ding without grizzling to myself about him. That's the issue with this - however it ends both parties generally spend the foreseeable future thinking they were right.

Last year ... in Germany (south of Munich), I observed a man with two small sons, erecting a tent .... he was trying to extract some metal pegs which had not been removed by a previous camper.
They were prooving to be ... very challenging ...
I went across and offered him a claw hammer ... and left him to it.
Later, he returned the hammer ... it had worked successfully ... we got chatting ... he invited us to his restaurant in Munich.
We got a fantastic meal for three, with wine, and he refused any contribution.
I think I'll continue to offer help/advice when I think it's needed!!!

Nice story Kelper,do good it often seems to come back.

I remember my wife bandaging an old mans cut foot when on a campsite on Isle de Oleron and the next day he gave us a huge tray full of oysters fresh from the sea.Yum yum.

When a fairly large drive away awning blew away tumbling as it went while the campervan owners were away exploring - we recovered their awning and set it back up over their goods and chattels which were still in place and made an impromptu storm strap out of a tow rope, bungees and pegs. Mr and mrs know-it-all were rewarded with a very nice bottle the following day.
Well we don't know very much - just enough to be useful.
Pity they didn't own a restaurant eh?

It is very good to hear these stories of (know it all) good Samaritans.
I was sitting having a beer outside my caravan a few years ago when two young ladies in their twenties? pulled in opposite. After a while they started to put an awning up. It was fun watching them but here are times when you know you should get up and help. They had bought it second hand with no instructions and it looked like carry on camping. Mr 'know a fair bit' had it up for them fairly quickly. My reward was to see them happy with my help.
It is a case of being sure you are helping and not interfering.
Fred.

Indeed, you are so right Federico ... it's all about timing and common sense.
