Hi all,
Just wanted to pick ur brains on a camping trip to Germany for our 2wk 2014 hol. Quite fancy Germany! What ferry crossing would you recommend? What driving route would you take, France or down thro Belgium etc? Any sites you favour? I am thinking about the Black Forest area, we have a folding camper, 2 little ones 4&6, and like scenic quietish places with towns to explore. I do enjoy the beach but obviously no beaches in Germany! We are not totally against the bigger sites but perhaps a good balance of the 2 to keep everyone happy!would you have a stop over and where? And does anyone know what the weather would be like in aug? Prob be from the 15th aug, now limited with the new school hol rule.is this black Saturday does anyone know?
We did Portsmouth to Santander this yr and really enjoyed camping in norther spain with our own camper. I am tempted by this again as driving is minimal, but feel feel we should see other places as we have done France a lot, although we do love it! Humm decisions!
Many thanks
Claire

Black Forest is a great place, just search and read all the positive posts. We went to Munstertal this year and are actively researching other sites in the Forest for next year. We had a 4 and a 16 month in our party. Pool was great and they had an indoor heated pool as well. Reviews of site Here Travelled Dover to Dunkerque, first night just outside Calais at Bien Assise. Second night at Montmedy and got there following afternoon.

I am interested in this post as we also are planning to go to Germany next summer.
We plan to go Dover - Dunkirk with a cheap NEC code DFDS ferry crossing then through Belgium, Luxembourg for cheap diesel then have a few nights at Freiburg and to Lake Constance for the remainder of the holiday. Not sure of stopovers until we book the ferry. J x

Will watch with interest, we are hoping to stay in Black Forest too! but want to be able to travel into Switzerland and Austria easily from our base. We have tents and I don't want to be moving sites too much

We're planning on leaving Somerset around 5am to catch eurotunnel around 11am. Finish the day by driving for around 3 hours on the other side to a site near Rheims, maybe Guignicort.

Should leave us with an easy 5ish hour drive to the Freiburg area. We haven't decided exactly which site yet, but may book a week at two sites with a view to checking the 2nd site and deciding then whether to change site or stay where we are.

We had a fab week's holiday (got engaged so definitely a good and memorable trip!) in Cologne a few years ago. We camped at Campingplatz der stadt Koln - reviews here : http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=9758

It was hard to book a place though - we thought we'd booked but they didn't really seem to know what we were talking about when we got there. They do fit people in though. It's a great location next to the river.

We did Dover-Calais, through Belgium and then cut the corner of Holland. Wasn't too bad of a drive, I guess you could then head south and east from there? Germany is definitely worth a camping tour!

We rent fabulously fitted out truck campers in San Francisco, USA.

I can definitely recommend Camping Alpirsbach as s super little site in the black forest - and not too far from Switzerland either. A suggestion for a stop-over on the way down could be the Eifel-Camp south of Aachen - excellent site with great facilities, including on site restaurant, but its does not do meals on a Monday.

Edit to add that I always travel from Hull to either Rotterdam or Zeebrugge, but that is because I live in Yorkshire and its easier for me.
