I have a Hymer Novs S with a width of 2.5mtrs (8'3"). As far as I know the maximum width allowed is 2.55mtrs. Has anyone with a wide van experienced problems or a tight fit going through these tolls? I had no problems last year with an Elddis Crusader but the Hymer is a lot wider.

Hi Saxoner, I have travelled all over France,Spain, Italy, Belgium and Holland with a 8ft 3 inch wide Volvo FH Globetrotter with a 45ft Trailer and I have never come across a Peage or border crossing that was to narrow for my truck. If you are unsure use the heavy goods lane and you should have no problem.

Thanks to you all for your helpful replies. I understand that the toll booths are narrow but what makes it worse is the raised edges either side. However its just a matter of being careful and lining up well before entering I guess.

no problems whatsoever when you see the monster lorries going through. You need to go in straight and not try to wriggle about once inside the bollards. If that means having to get out of the car to pay, so be it. There again, there is plenty of paint on the concrete so some folk have mis plonked along the line
If you have to get out to pay(with a caravan on you can't get too close!) they often have a high curb. SWMBO caught our door on one. Luckily it only needed a dab of touch up on door edge!

That's the only real problem .... towed rig being wider than the towing vehicle, and vehicle attempting to get closer to the ticket m/c or toll booth ... don't! Not sure whether all, or some, motorhomes have the same problem with the cab being narrower than the body.
To make everything easier, why not get an electronic tag (Sanef or equivqlent), and then just sail through without having the worry of lining up the booths or m/cs? Works for us.
