What time of year are you thinking of going? It's very hot in the summer and the campsites get very crowded. It would probably be pleasanter in spring or early summer. We've been to Hungary twice with the caravan, but didn't feel we wanted to stay very long! The first time, 5 years ago, we were en route from Slovakia to Romania and only had one overnight stop and did no sight-seeing. We were rather off the beaten track and found the roads bumpy and the towns we passed through were uninviting. Last August we visited Hungary again. From Slovakia we crossed the border at Sahy where we bought an electronic vignette. We stopped for two nights in Budapest, at Haller Camping. I wouldn't recommend it - totally overcrowded with campervans, caravans and tents crammed in every which way, EHU's dangerously overloaded and below-par toilet facilities (showers had communal changing.) However Budapest itself is a wonderful city and it has to be said that the campsite was very conveniently situated, with a metro station nearby. We took a guided bus tour, followed by a river tour. We had thought of going to Balaton next but we saw that the road leading to it was just one long traffic jam, so we carried on to the Croatian border. So I'd advise avoiding July and August, and staying in one of the campsites on the outskirts of Budapest!
