Visit the various spa baths and Operetta and you will have fun. There is one spa that is in a cave and you can swim along tunnels where warm water comes out of the rock. Avoid if claustrophobic as the tunnel roof is not far above the water surface.....

There is a famous horsemanship display just outside Budapest that is impressive even if you don't like horses. I went in the evening and it was all done with flaming torches. Nice meal there as well, and I don't think it was horse meat.

I've not been for a while but the last time I was in Budapest several areas of the city were a bit seedy with strip clubs and brothels. Even the 4* hotels had prostitutes soliciting in the lounge areas.

The sites I saw were very tight for space - units almost touching. It would be worth while checking before booking as to pitch size. I have only been in the area of Budapest and to the north and it may well be different around lake Balaton.

Driving there from East Anglia I have used Stena from Harwich to Hook of Holland as it has meant that I could leave work and catch the ferry that night and get a decent nights sleep before a long drive the next day. From experience you should be able to get well across Germany in the first day as the roads are straightforward.

What time of year are you thinking of going?  It's very hot in the summer and the campsites get very crowded.  It would probably be pleasanter in spring or early summer.

We've been to Hungary twice with the caravan, but didn't feel we wanted to stay very long!  The first time, 5 years ago, we were en route from Slovakia to Romania and only had one overnight stop and did no sight-seeing.  We were rather off the beaten track and found the roads bumpy and the towns we passed through were uninviting.

Last August we visited Hungary again.  From Slovakia we crossed the border at Sahy where we bought an electronic vignette.  We stopped for two nights in Budapest, at Haller Camping.  I wouldn't recommend it - totally overcrowded with campervans, caravans and tents crammed in every which way, EHU's dangerously overloaded and below-par toilet facilities (showers had communal changing.)  However Budapest itself is a wonderful city and it has to be said that the campsite was very conveniently situated, with a metro station nearby.  We took a guided bus tour, followed by a river tour.

We had thought of going to Balaton next but we saw that the road leading to it was just one long traffic jam, so we carried on to the Croatian border.

So I'd advise avoiding July and August, and staying in one of the campsites on the outskirts of Budapest!

Well i must admit i really enjoyed the Lake Balaton area but it was many years ago (28!!) and it was mid-season.

Things would be very different now,i bet you dont even have to spend an hour or more queing for a loaf of bread.

We were at Balaton and Budapest 2 years ago and plan to go next year. It was June when we went and it was okay with the site at Balaton almost empty but even at Haller camping there was plenty of room. After Hungary we went to Slovakia and Czech. If you are over the retirement age then you get free travel in Budapest.

I worked in Hungary about 15 years ago. Lake Balaton was the place to go - I think that it is the largest lake in Europe. I did not camp, however, saw some campsites. I currently work with some Hungarians and understand that there are now some really good quality campsites there that are very popular with Hungarian, Austrian and German tourists
