I'm hoping to get some opinions from the experts! We had a fantastic two week holiday at Les Deux Fontaines in Finistere this summer and are all keen to go and explore more of France - we've just discovered we'll have another small one in the family by then so we're keen to keep things simple but really would like to see another area... I'm looking at sites around the Carnac area but worrying that they might be too commercial/busy and I'm also looking at the Pays de Loire region, thinking we'd do a one or two night stopover at a little site on the way (our kids are all rubbish in the car and we live 20 mins from Plymouth so that's the only crossing we can consider).
My mum has spent the afternoon telling me that she hated the Loire, that it's windy and rainy and boring... I thought it might be nice to explore a different area rather than returning to Brittany again immediately, but I don't want to spend the whole time regretting it! We did have a wonderful time in Brittany, but we were VERY lucky with the weather this year and I think that makes such a difference in a tent! The children will be 13, 6, 3 and 4 months by next August - we're planning to go at the end of August to get at least one cheaper week.
Any advice would be very gratefully received!

Congratulations!!
We like all areas of France! they all have something unique to offer.
I would be looking for a really child friendly site, rather than a specific area.
We go to the Loire Valley every year as our caravan is sited there. The weather is 90% warm and sunny. Some rain but not enough to spoil a day let alone our holiday and we have never yet had any windy weather. There is loads for us to do and see but we are child free so can't help with the doing stuff with kids and if yours like the beach are a long way from the sea but there are lots of lakes with man made beaches, pedalos etc. We go the last 2 weeks in August when it is quieter but still enough tourism going on to give it a buzz.
We've been to Brittany numerous times and peak season the weather is usually good, particularly in the south east. Carnac is lovely, but actually so is the Loire so you're onto a winner wherever ou go.
Camping Les Druids is less commercial than others in the Carnac area. La Plage is right on the beach as is La Baie, both at La Trinite Sur Mer just up the road from Carnac. Again they arent the big holiday park types. Check on the site review pages via the link above. There are loads of options. I'm pretty sure we'll be around this area for the last week of our August trip. We love to pitch up here, final stop before the ferry from Caen. I've no idea where we'll be first stop.

Brittany is very like North Wales with added pancakes. The Loire is where some of the most expensive wines come from (and it takes sun to make the grapes do their thing). The Loire has big castles. Wales, umm... I mean Brittany has windswept beaches. Your mum must have just been unlucky.
Yes, my mum was unlucky - and used that holiday to write off the whole of France AND camping
Thanks for these thoughts - I do like the idea of exploring somewhere new and there seem to be lots of lovely things for children around the Loire area, although the distance to the beach from some of the lovely sites I've seen does worry me a bit.
legenetay, can I ask where you'd recommend for lakes? That sounds ideal - is there a specific area that is good?
I found Les Embruns last night, which looks lovely but is very similar area to where we were this year - not sure whether to play it safe and gamble on the weather or try something new!
Local to our caravan there are leisure lakes at Rille and Breille Les Pins. Both have a café in season, picnic tables and some water activities. These little leisure areas can be found in the summer season at most villages with a sizeable lake. The biggest in the region is Lac de Moncontour which is a good way south of the Loire but has a great man made beach and lots of water based activities as well as nature and exercise trails. If you Google "Base de loisirs Loire" you should come up with lots of ideas.
When the OP refers to Pays de la Loire I think that they're referring to the area most of us would call the Vendee rather than the Loire valley and chateaux.
Carnac is really lovely and we went there with a 5 4 and a 3 month old and have been several times since.
The area is lovely, with beautiful golden beaches and coves, weather generally good especially around the Gulf of Morbihan. Lovely towns, nice places to eat, nice markets and generally not to touristy.
Highly recommend Les Menhirs in carnac, le grande metarie, or Kervillor at Trinite sur mer.
