We are first timers on taking our caravan to Spain and I've now booked our ferries for a holiday in January . Thing is, we arrive in Santander at 17;30 and I m not sure I fancy driving in the dark for too long on our first day . Has anyone got any tips for a site near Santander where we could just stay over on arrival and then we could start the driving on the following morning?
The CC and CCC brochures don't seem to have have anything nearby thats open all winter.
Many Thanks
Paul

I'd stay on the north coast area for the duration!
However, to answer your question ... which direction are you heading? Maybe I could suggest a site that's not too far from Santander, but, at least, in the direction you are planning to go.
Assuming you are heading south then Burgos may be the nearest site open which is about 2 hours away.
Most of the sailings in January with the Crap Finistre go into Bilbao which is easy as you can stay on the docks there overnight.
If you are not too happy about driving at night on a strange road then it may pay you to change to one that lands at Bilbao.
We did the trip last January but landed at Bilbao at around 5.30, we stayed on the docks with at least 10 other caravans but two motorhomes did go to Burgos.
This year we're not risking the Bay of Biscay and I don't like the Crap Finistre so driving down through France this time and will be setting off on Boxing Day.
Mike+Co, just out of interest would you post your route and sites you plan to stay at on your route down. I am doing our run back to Southern Spain in early January, so it would be good to compare your plans.
Pclufc, I have compared the price of the Santander ferry with the cost of driving through France. Driving through France was by far the cheaper option, providing you have the time to stop off at a couple of site en-route. Also, have you taken into account how rough the sea is going to be in January?!! Whichever way you go, have a safe journey.

Oh Dear, sounds like there's a few things I haven't thought of. I never thought of staying on the north coast . We are heading to the Costa Blanca and have booked via the CCC s winter sun brochure. I hadn't thought about the bay if biscay to be honest. Our only experience of Brittany ferries ( without a caravan) was very good so i guess the Santander one isn't so great? Bit late though cos I ve paid for it all. Oh well . Any idea whether to head towards Madrid and then south or over towards the east first.?
Thanks for the tip about staying over at Bilbao first.
Any other advice gratefully received.
Absolutely! Failed to clock your January date! Lives up to its name at that time of year: the Costa Verde!
In summer it's glorious.
The road from Santander to Burgos is pretty good ... motorway a lot of the way ... will take about two and a half hours ... maybe three.
There is a good site just north of Burgos, which is open all year round.
You could also get a copy of this which will give you plenty of choices.

We will be using the same route that we have used in previous years and as it's 1215 mile from Calais to La Manga we take 4 days.
Early morning ferry Dover/Calais and travel via Rouen down to Camping Acacia which is about 3 mile off the motorway at Tours.
We will then go to Camping Larouletta at St Jean de Luz
You then have a choice of sites depending where you are heading, we normally then head for Madrid and stay at Camping International at Aranjuez which is about 30 mile south of Madrid. If you are heading toward Valencia then you would go via Zarragoza where there is a site.
The next stop for us is then La Manga.
As we are averaging 300 mile a day we use the motorways and at all the sites you can park without unhooking the caravan if you have one.
