Really cannot decide where to stay next year in France, have gone back to the drawing board. Last month we changed to a caravan from a trailer tent so the option of touring is more appealing than before. Just wondering if anyone has / does do continental touring as their main family holiday and would share what it's like. We have a max of 2 wks our kids will be 7 and 10. They are less likely to make friends the shorter we're on site for but I wanted to explore the option even if it's not what we end up doing.

From tents to trailer tents to a tin tent to an air tent to trailer tent and back to tin tent!

If you only have 2wks you would need to tour in a circle from port of entry to port of exit to get the most out of the time you have, so you need to choose your circle & best to stay off autoroutes if you want to take in the passing scenery & stop in towns for a coffee to get a feel of the local atmosphere for an hour.

What do you want to do, look at different architecture & scenery, do you want to visit historical places of interest? If you are more concerned with good campsite facilities & weather than sightseeing then you might as well just stop the whole time on one good campsite far enough south to get good weather because touring is about seeing different places & getting the feel of them.

We did a 'tour' - our first family caravanning holiday, when we had just two weeks and a bit.  We set off Friday afternoon, straight from school, and added on the Bank Holiday Monday at the end.  We spent  Friday night in an Aire on the way south.  We toured  'just because we could' - we wanted to see as much as we could in a short time.

We did cross-country down to Burgundy, with lunch alongside the Seine, where the boys had a swim, then did 3 days at Village des Meuniers also in Burgundy, 4 nights at Remoulins near the Pont du Gard for some amazing memories of walking along the very top of the bridge and swimming in the beautiful Gardon just below the Pont.  Then we had 4 days at Brousse la Villaret north of Carcassonne, with a memorable evening visit to Carcassonne, followed by 4 days in the Dordogne, with a very long day's drive back to Calais, for an overnight stop, and then home on the Bank Holiday Monday, very late.

I'm not sure I would recommend doing that distance, but we found it gave us some very different experiences, the boys were at each site long enough to make friends, and we had a lot of very happy memories to come home to - plus a never to be forgotten whole tray of nectarines, dripping with juice, bought from the grower for the equivalent of a £1 or £2.  Nothing better, eaten sitting outside the caravan in the sunshine.

I'm watching this with interest as I think we would like to do something similar next yr. Val, your tour sounds very tempting. I will have to get the map out and have a look. I do like idea of staying for few days in various places otherwise it might just feel like we are towing for 2 wks.

We are restricted with dates as we have to be back for eldest sons A level results!

All my four children (long grown up) would smile at going back home for A level results, Gail. Three of them remember which pay phone in France they were at to get their results, there never was any question of going home for that, and the youngest was on a cargo ship to the island of St Helena when the results came out and we sent her a fax.  Surely it's a lot easier now with the internet in operation.

Hi Berriow...I think he is worried in case he doesn't get the required grades (I don't think he has anything to worry about) and needs to go into clearing. Don't fancy trying to do that with patchy wifi(ours was this yr) in France!

Also his school will only give results in person!

We have done 4 continental touring holidays with our caravan - and children, now aged 6 and 9.  With effort on both our parts we have now got our respective employers to allow us 3 weeks off which is a big help if you can possibly manage it.  We have done 2 weeks though - we just reduce the number of overnight stops and have tended to stay in the northern half of France when we only have 2 weeks.  it works out great - we usually stay between 4 and 7 nights at each site, plus 1 or 2 overnights.  We enjoy exploring, a bit of sightseeing, cycling and, now the children are a bit older, the beach and the pool are also in demand!

We've always managed to find a site, and nearly all of them have been very good with sufficient clean sanitary facilities and pool.  We usually have a choice of pitches and it means we can pick shade/ sun etc at the time to suit the conditions.  We only booked once and the site was awful - we moved after 3 days!

One thing we have found though is that we only like travelling for a maximum of 5 hours in the car in a day.  We're not very good at getting off early, so we usually leav site about 11am, travel for a couple of hours, stop for lunch then travel for 2-3 hours further.  Any longer than that and tempers start to get frayed!  Remember it's a holiday!

A couple of years ago we did a touring holiday for a total of 16 nights. Crossed via the tunnel at night and stopped at a nearby motorway aire for a few hours rest. Did another overnight stop before having 3 nights in the Auvergne, 4 nights in the Eastern Loire, 6 nights near Angers, and final 2 nights near Calais. Our boys were 9 and 7 and the site they made most friends on was the one we were at for just two nights. We hadn't booked any sites.
For the last two years we've booked either one or two main sites, leaving some time at the end of the holiday unbooked. Last year this meant we had a few nights in Normandy, and this year, after a week in the Dordogne and a week in the Averyon we had 8 nights left. Spent six of them near Paris and the last two near Calais. The kids enjoy visiting new sites and exploring them but don't always want to leave. It's amazing, once you've done it a few times, how quick you can get a basic set up done. The only thing we find is that when moving about a lot we tend not to bother with the awning which is ok but with kids its handy to keep all their stuff in. Hope you have a great holiday. Breaking with tradition and spending two weeks in one place.

A good tour with slightly less driving might be to 'do' the Loire Valley from (say) Tours down to Angers ... or even further.
Choose three or four strategic sites from which to do all your chateaux bashing ... there are some absolutely fantastic 'son et lumiere' shows ... chateaux not to miss: Chambourd, Blois, Amboise, Azay, Chenonceaux, Villandry, Angers and several others ... there's tons of info .... plus great cycling, walking, boating, horse riding ...
It should give you a great overview of a spectacular part of France.

We to are thinking the same, 2 years ago we spent 18 nights away.
We picked the eldest up from school and set off for a night near Dover . Next night a short trip near Rouen. Then main weeks in Ile De Rey.

Returning up through central France with an overnight before St Omer for a few nights before crossing for home.

Next year we are thinking of doing something similar but we are hoping to meet up with friends and family once they confirm their sites and dates. We are lucky as we are away for 20 nights in total so hopefully we will be able to reach the South coast.

Our 5 year old was able to make friends at most sites even the overnight ones.

Hi everyone. This is my first post as I’m ‘Romahomeless’ at the moment but forever live in hope of another one soon as soon as funds allow! We still like exploring on a budget, and so at the moment we’re using our everyday Renault Kangoo kitted out as a day-van, and keep a Lexon tourer-static caravan (now there’s a novelty!) in Normandy for longer stay comfort. For touring around France and Italy, we then use either the low-cost Hotel chains or rent (off peak) Mobile Homes which can almost rival campsite costs. I became so enamoured with the idea of inexpensive holidays that I found myself writing a book - ‘Shoestring’s Grand Tour’ about how well it all works. Bit of ‘sideways thinking’ might help someone with a few ideas. Hope you don’t mind me giving it a plug - if I don’t then no one else will!

Thanks for all the responses. We've decided to go back to our original plan for 10nights somewhere but if that's not available then will consider alternatives in light of your info. I think we were unfortunate with our pitch this summer and it took a week for our kids to make any friends as we were pitched opposite a group of 5 families, most wouldn't even say hello to us, another group we eventually spoke to and next to the only vacant pitch on the site of 400. We've learnt that our kids making friends makes a massive difference to all of our's holiday experience. Our kids can get along v nicely sometimes but they get bored/annoyed with each other and then it's not v enjoyable....

Seek out Dutch owned sites in France for a good family atmosphere, often its almost 100% Dutch campers & they usually have organized kids activities. Fluent English is invariably spoken by owners, most campers & the Dutch kids start learning English at an early school age so English kids can mix & get involved ok.

The clue to finding Dutch owned campsites is the Dutch sounding names of the owners that will be on the campsite website.

I was trying to work out how many family touring hols ive done, about 16 inc 4 weeks down to Spain,6 weeks down to Italy and many more. They have all gone wonderfully well although when we first started having 4 kids under 4 years of age was demanding.

Yours are at that age when making friends is so important, sites do vary but one ive stayed at 3 times were they have made lovely friends each time (mostly English) was camping Filature near Clermont Ferrand.Wonderful times.

My eldest will be 15 and yougest two 12 next summer and im mindful of these great times of family holidays maybe have only another few years to run.Make the most of them great times.

Maybe 5 days or so in Loire area, maybe somewhere like Le Chant D'Oiseau which is English owned and attracts a lot of families in summer but only has 10 pitches plus some gites, but great facilities for such a small site. Our two of similar age made friends easily there

Maybe then head out towards Vendee coast near La Tranche or around St Jean de Monts for a coastal site. You can then overnight on way back up to ports if you wish or do a long day trek back up

Not touring in sense maybe you mean but with kids that age sometime a bit of certainty as to where they will be for next few days at least helps settling in
