We didn't realise that all of France closed on 1st November........there goes the Christmas shopping then! We're away home tomorrow

Yep, All Saints Day - the french tend to enjoy themselves in a different way on their public holidays - Garden centres and DIY stores just doesnt do it for them:)

France is not closed in the slightest on the 1st or 11th of Nov. Auchan, Carrefour, Leclerc, Decathlon, Leroy Merlin are all open, check their websites. If you are there today, you will notice that the French enjoy themselves just the same as the Brits on public hols...by shopping.

If the op wants to load up with beer at Calais they will find the Pidou at the Transmarck truckstop is open 24/7.

Leclerc, SuperU & all others are closed in La Vendee today, we sail from Cherbourg tomorrow. The grand plan was to do a Xmas shop this afternoon! Never mind, we live & learn!

What time do you sail? the shops are open as normal tomorrow, there is an Auchan in Cherbourg. Coming in on the N13 take the left hand lane with weight limit for car ferry also signed La Glacerie, over roundabout & you will see Auchan on left, access is via next roundabout. If you can't buy it there, you can't buy it.

Always check for jours feries when in France!


Medium sized supermarkets normally open in the mornings on a bank holiday and a Sunday, the hypermarkets normally remain closed. Large DiY stores normally open.

According to their website, half the Leclercs in Vendee were open this morning, so not completely closed & perhaps next yr all will be open. Its good to see French shops becoming more customer focused.

What, so they will be " just like ours" ?.
What would n't I give to be heading down to my locall Intermarche instead of Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury's because not one of them has all the stuff I want.
And I'm already doing my nut if I hear another "Sleigh bells ring ----"
Do I need a French fix?

Indeed, Asda & Tesco don't have beer & wine at the price I want or diet iced tea either so better shopping at Leclerc's & yes the French are gradually coming around to 7day opening so all good & judging by how crowded their supermkts are on Sunday mornings & public hols its what the French public want.

When we we having this argument in the UK yrs ago the question was asked 'If the Brits don't want Sunday opening why are the shops full on Sunday?' So its good to see the French public are gradually getting what they want & it will help reduce their high unemployment rate as well.

I still love those lovely quiet Sundays as a kid though. No supermarkets and no shops open other than the local Jewish Deli where we were sent to buy Baigels on a Sunday.

I still think Sunday opening is a retro step.

Hmm i used to hate Sundays. Its nothing to do with shops although they were part if the whole 'thou shall do absolutely nothing' thing which surrounded sundays in the 70s and 80s,and doubtless for decades before. Thankfully religious influence has waned and it feels more like a proper day. The best thing is that sundays are still lazy, for us anyway. But if you want to go out or do something, you can.
