A possibility for 2014 is a stay near to Carcassonne. I have been looking at Camping de la Cité, which is the nearest site.

I'm open to other ideas if anyone knows of any sites which they liked or would recommend in the area.

If you have been to this area can you let me know what you thought?

Camping de la Cite is definitely the nearest and most convenient for Carcassonne, but others recommend L'Arnauteille, or Val d'Alet, and we've stayed at Le Martinet Rouge, at Brousse la Villaret, north of Carcassonne.

If all you want to do it visit La Cite, then I'd say stay near as you can, do an early morning visit, and leave before the crowds, or choose a site further afield, and visit (as we did the first time) in the early evening, which is very atmospheric.  You can have a meal, wander about La Cite without the crowds (talking about low season, here), and take some fabulous photographs.

It's a lovely place to visit, for a short time, but the crowds, and the tourist tat, make a low season, or even winter visit, much more interesting than joining the 'madding crowd' squeezing in in summer.  We love it on a winter day, spent with our friend in the Aude, lunch in the new town, then an early evening wander about La Cite with no one else there but us..............!

If you want to be able to walk to the old City then la Cite is a good choice. This year we stayed at Camping A L'Ombre des Micocouliers at Trebes which is not far away, infact you can cycle to Carcasonne along the Canal du Midi.

This was also our choice
Trebes

It is also very close to Minerve and some rather tasty wines

A small word of caution. Carcassonne is just about THE hottest place in SW France in high summer. We walked up the hill from the town in 40C and the queue for the water tap at the top was 20 m long!

Thanks for the replies.

If we go to that area next year I'd like to be there on the 22 July at the same time as the Tour de France. This obviously might mean that any chosen campsite is fully booked at that time - so adding to choosing difficulties.

I had noticed Camping A L'Ombre des Micocouliers, but for me an outdoor pool on the campsite is a must. Le Martinet Rouge looks like a good alternative to the closeness of Camping de la Cité.

The thought of heat is one of the attractions to go to the area. But I know what you mean. This year we cycled to Domme on a day where the temperature was probably at 40C. I was ok when we got to the top but it took a while before my wife and daughter would talk to me again - bliss!

Minerve looks like it's worth a visit in its own right. Funny how you can always discover new places you hadn't seen or heard of before in France.

We visited the area a couple of times although we rented a house (300 euro a week).

As well as Carcassonne, a visit to the ruined castles at Lastours and the old Abbey at Caunes-Minervois makes for a good day out.

Minerve is definitely worth a visit, and as Stuart says, in the centre of some good wines!  Aside from the village itself, there is a dry river bed with a cave/bridge across it which runs underneath the village, and the stones in the river bed have been arranged into sculptures which are added to each time you go.  There are good restaurants in Olonzac, and in Homps, too, and they're both worth visiting.

I can highly recommend the wine co-op in Peyriac-Minervois (right at the side of the main road at the SE end of the village). Some vg wines with prices mainly still under the 5 euro mark - the vin de pays under three euro.

The Vin de Pays Cite de Carcassonne are usually well drinkable at under three euro a bottle as well, available in all the supermarkets in the area.

We stayed at this site, which has an amazing Greco-Roman swimming pool complex ... and is near Carcassone.
We were there for the Bastille day week ... the firework display, using the old city walls, is one of the best in France ... a great party night, too!
Cycling the canal was excellent ... and plenty of other places to visit .. worth exploring cathar history and refuges.

I'd also say La Cité for ease of access, nice walk along the river. Like David and Stuart we've also stayed at Trebes, and cycled into Carcassonne along the Canal du Midi, but as you like your pool, then it's definitely La Cité.
