Considering combining my 2 loves and thinking of a trip to perpignan to see an away match and wondering if anyone has done this? Any tips or advice gratefully received.

Here's a post from someone doing the same thing but in the Toulon area at Easter this year.  It may help.  Otherwise, there are absolutely loads of sites around Perpignan.  Le Haras at Palau del Vidre is a good site, just a bit away from the crowds, and takes Camping Cheques, meaning a pitch for two adults, car and caravan (or tent/campervan/motorhome), awning and electricity costs just £14.95 per night.  I guess if you go for the matches in April/May as shown on this calendar you may well find good weather too.

The atmosphere, when there is a match on, is fantastic.  We were in Narbonne, in Les Halles, when all the crowd were in there having a pre-match breakfast!  The crowds all display the club colours on their cars, and toot as they are driving along.

If you fly down instead of driving then Le Haras is 'taxi distance' (or there is a bus) from Perpignan airport.  Car hire isn't expensive outside peak season, and you could always stay in the site accommodation, or buy a very cheap tent from a local supermarket, and 'make do'.  If you're driving down, though, then you can make the journey into a holiday, and do the trip via the toll-free route described here and make a stop off in Millau to see the Viaduct and explore the absolutely stunning Gorges du Tarn - which are beautiful in Spring.

Thanks Val. We were definately thinking of driving, and make a holiday 10-14 days. I am the only driver so will probably do an over night somewhere on the way down then a couple of nights somewhere on the way back up. I am st Helens fan so we play Catalan dragons in June this year so hoping the weather will be good.

June is a lovely time in that area - it's when we always holiday, and for about the last six years we've 'ended up' in the Languedoc as it's been the only area where the weather forecast has been consistently good.

We may see you around there, somewhere!

I don't know how much St Helens charge for a ticket nowadays but another big advantage of going to games in France is that tickets tend to be much cheaper than here. I lived in France until 4 years ago, and saw Australia against France ( Darren Lockyear in his pomp ) in Toulouse for 15 euros - - open admission, sit where you like.In the other code, tickets to see Toulouse generally started at 10 euros, unless they were playing Stade Francais or Biarritz, and then they were a couple of euros more. Have a great trip.

Must admit I hadn't considered how much the match tickets might be out there. Just had a quick look and they haven't got them on the website yet, but the season tickets are cheaper than the club's over here, so I guess single match tickets will be too.
