We went in August 2012, but I can't remember where we stayed, sorry
To get to the Eagles Nest you drive to a big car park - there is a charge to park, then buy a ticket for the bus that takes you up the single track road. Some fit people were walking! The buses go up in a pack, it's organised so that they can pull into parking places to let the buses going in the other direction pass - very German! It takes maybe 15 minutes.
Anyway, at the top car park you all disembark and can either then get the very ornate lift up the rest of the way or you can walk.
There's not much of the building you can go in, as it's mostly a resturant. Outside there is a little kiosk for a cup of tea and the obligatory tat and a little more a hike to the highest post where the cross is.
As you would expect there is no mention of Hitler or the war

Found it! Camping Allweglehen
It was pretty wet and misreable when we stayed, but not muddy. Terraced pitches, toilets OK, good resturant - not sure what I ate, but it was nice.
The bright lights in the surrounding trees are fireflys!

We have been to the Kehlstein House (Eagles Nest ) and this area many times in the last 35 years, last 10 with the caravan and as rabbitboy says you catch a coach to the next car park where you need to get a time ticket for catching the bus down before you get into the Brass lined lift with leather seats that Hitler used the few times he went up there. You can eat/drink in the outside cafe where you are waited on. Views are wonderful all round over Konigsee and Salzburg.
Before you leave the Obersalzberg be sure to visit the Documentation Centre next to where you catch the coach. It is excellent you can ALS go into one of the Bunkers. If you wish to drive a bit further up the road visit Thw Turken where you can visit the private Hitler Bunkers with Hitlers, Eva Bronne and Blondies rooms. These led directly to Hitlers Home. Also if up there with the car drive along the Rossfeld Pass (weather permitting) it has wonderful views.
Other places to visit are the picture postcard village and church of Ramsau, just into Austria is Salzburg and at Oberndorf you can visit the picturesque tiny church The Stille Nacht Kapelle, where the Vicar wrote the Carol Silent Night and the Museum in the Square.

We always stop at the ACSI Camping Card Site of Winkl-Landthal at Bischofwiesen which is just off the approach Road which leads from the Autobahn to Berchtesgaden which is just a few minutes drive into this lovely town, one of our favourites. This campsite is much more access able than the one in the post above . That is situated at the top of a long winding steep hill. If you need any more info let me know would be pleased to help.
Oh yes 2 points if you need fuel drive into outskirts of Salzburg in Austria where it is much cheaper. Be aware that the Eagles Nest is not usually open before May 1st and it can be as late as the end of May depending on the snow situation.

Hi, we stayed in a tent next to a lake in Zell-Am-See (Band of Brothers) was shot there. It wasn't far to Berchtesgaden. The area is well worth a visit.

DiPhil mention getting petrol near Salzsburg. beware if you use the autobahn in Austria as you'll need to buy a toll ticket before travelling on it. We've been randomly stopped on it along with everyone else, fortunately we had one. We've stopped at Bad Reichenhall before, next to the river and an easy walk in. Campingplatz Staufeneck i think. Nice spa town and not far to drive to Berchtesgarden. You can actually walk down from the eagles nest to town, along a walkers path. Fantastic views. Takes about 2 hours back to town max
