I am thinking of driving from Calais to La Rochelle in the summer, I have never used a sat nav as I have heard they can get you into some sticky situations. Has anyone used one on this route and was it easy.
Thanks

Drove from Calais to Lucon in 2012 with my Garmin Nuvi with no problems whatsoever. In fact it's always been very reliable both in UK and France and finding petrol stations just off the motorways in France where it's cheaper than service stations is a doddle using it.
You are probably looking at this the wrong way, a satnav is just a tool, it will get you into a 'sticky situation' anywhere unless you read the instructions. Any problems are usually caused by operator error, ie taking you through the middle of a town instead of around the bypass although the bypass will be clearly signposted, I'm sure.
The route from Calais to La Rochelle is straightforward & well signposted, even if you use a satnav you should read a map & familiarise yourself with the route.
I would not be bothered but will have the caravan on the back, I have looked on the map and it seems streight forward but one or two towns to go through.

Sat navs a great tools. We have been through France and Spain using the cheapest unbranded navigator without a problem. They are a great help BUT not to be followed blindly. They need a bit of common sense which the drier must provide.
Use it in conjunction with a map and have a good idea of your route.
If you are taking the route through Rouen the bridge to the bypass was closed this summer requiring a diversion but apparently it will open again in time for this summer so should be no problem, you just follow signs Le Mans, takes you onto ring rd which is easiest route.

Have you some definite news about the bridge re-opening. The last time I looked no finishing date was issued.
We find a sat nav is an absolute boon. No, not perfect ... but about 97% reliable ... and great for navigating in towns, getting to final addresses and not missing that vital turn off on a motorway (especially if you are in/on a 'Spaghetti Junction' type scenario).
