This may be a silly question but can you use you digital tv to pick up any channels in France? I am going away in July and just wondering the best way to use the tv

Depends on the tv..... We pick up lots of French channels in most places we visit.

Should be Just a matter of retuning and a decent aerial. And check your settings on the tv. And
But all tv's are so different, I just have free view at home , the cheaper own brand and 8 years older tv seems better reception in bad weather ( no idea why ) than the tv thats 4 times the cost.

But of cause I presume you speak french as you will only pick up the French channels unless you go for "FreeSat" then I presume you need a dish.

There are bits missing to your question   Are you looking to receive French TV or English bbc 1 2 etc and where in France
If your near Calais etc its possible to receive UK digital TV with an ariel further than that you will need something else
if you want french Tv
France uses a transmission system known as SECAM the UK uses PAL if you wish to receive French terrestrial TV which has six stations TF1, France 2, France 3, Canal Plus, M6 and Arte then its likely not possible with your UK TV through an an ariel though you will pick up other chanels.

The likely bit is your further away than Calais and want British TV in which case buy your self a satellite dish and box,. if you search threads on forums in here you will see that dependent on how far South in France you intend going the bigger the dish.
A decent small dish suitable for north France and box will set you back about 65.00 you then only need the bigger dish if further south and a tripod to fasten it on

80 cm should do in the vendee fine. Only thing worth considering is if you will travel further. You then have to swap the dish for a bigger one. The Maplin Aldi suitcase sets which are usually around 69.95 or less are great value coming with your receiver and a dish which is absolutely fine in this country and north France or if you have a sky box or other receiver already then you just need the dish.   You can pick up a dish 80 cm to a 100 of fleabay for around 30.00 to £65.00 Get an aluminium one if you can as of course low weight and an aluminium tripod from the photo section A hole drilled at each leg and secured with an awning peg. Avoid the folding dishes whatever you do.

I'm not so good on shy boxes, having manged to evade the clutches of sky but from what I know most models yes it will work, though you may need to put a card in, any card will do, old bank card, Tesco card etc on some models.
What you need to do is add channels
To do this and access the extra channels, you need to add them to the "Other Channels" section of the Digibox "Services" menu.
Bring up the Services menu and choose option 4 for System Setup then 4 again for Add Channels.
Type in the frequency 10773
Change Symbol rate to 22
Change FEC to 5/6
select find channels and the list of channels being broadcast by that transponder appears.
Use the arrow buttons to highlight say ch 5 and press Select
CH 5 the selected channel will now be available under the "Other Channels" option in the Services menu.
You can save up to 50 channels in this fashion 10 or 15 is usually enough for most.

Although a Sky Box will work fine in Northern France, it may not perform as well in the South.

The Sky Box needs a fair lump of signal before it will come out to play, this is due to the fact the the tuner section of the Sky Box is known to have poor sensitivity.

For outside of UK you will get better results from a Freesat Box, such as the Humax models which are known to have a more sensitive tuner.

We use a Freesat Humax Foxsat PVR, which is handy for when the satellite signal is not strong enough, as there is always plenty of recorded stuff stored on it that we can watch.
