Hi everyone.
Well,we are pretty organised for our camping trip. We have booked 7nights in Moulin de l'Eclis about a half hour north of Sainte Nazaire, then we are heading south to Les Amiaux to meet some friends for another 11 nights. We bought a Royal Pescara tent with awning and have pitched and used it a couple of times already. in fact we are heading on a 3 night break in Co. Clare next week with a family group. I am looking forward to the opportunity to fine tune our packing. we are very happy with our tent, it's large and there were no leaks when we camped the end of May in lashing rain. It does take up a lot of room in the Galaxy but we will have to work around that.
One question I have for those in the know.... How easy is it to get camping gas in France ?. We have a 2 burner Camping gaz stove with grill. I presume the cylinders are the same on the Continent ?
Thanks for all the advice so far...heading out on July 25th....can't wait !

The camping gaz 907 cylinder is the same. It's available in supermarkets or some campsites will have them, probably cheaper in supermarket though. Enjoy your trip!

Don't worry, you can get the gas at most supermarkets. Remember though that they are usually closed on Sundays so keep an eye on the cooker -spluttering or noisy flame means it's time for a refill, and you don't want to run out on a Sunday! Campsite shop, it it has one, May also do gas but may be more expensive!

Before we got the Trailer we use to carry two CampinGaz cylinders, a 907 and 904 as backup.

Having two CampinGaz cylinders means you never have to worry about running out Gas.

One of the great things about CampinGaz cylinders apart from the price of the Gas, is that they still remain the most practical Gas Cylinder for camping even after 60 years or more, nothing touches them for there compact size.

These days we carry 2 of the 907 cylinders, and the current one in use has lasted for over 7 weeks camping, and still has Gas left in it.

The use of EHU has greatly cut down our Gas usage whilst camping.

Hi Safron
I see you are not long back from France. How was the weather ?. Were you hot in your tent at night time ?. What did you sleep in ?. We are heading to the Vendee at the end of July so I am just trying to gauge what to bring for our family of 6. I would hate to bring sleeping bags that were too hot to use.
Thanks !

Hi GeneralSherman.
You ain't going to be needing sleeping bags in the South of France during July, that I can guarantee you.

All we take is a Cotton top sheet, and even that can be to hot to sleep under for our double sleeping bed.

When our Son now 29 used to come with us, he used to sleep in one of the Cotton sleeping bag liners, they work quite well instead of sleeping bags.

We do pack away a double Duvet of 1.5 Tog, got that from Netto £5 back in 2008, and we have only deployed it the once but it is always handy to have just in case.

We had a horrific storm the first night but after that the weather was hot hot hot. We were in Disney during the day and not back till late evening about 8pm so it had cooled a good bit , we slept in tshirts and sleeping bags but the kids were kicking of the sleeping bags as they were so hot but during the night I pulled them up on them.
we moved up to Brittany for second half of holiday and we did need the sleeping bags as it wasnt as warm up that end.

I would say down in vendee it will be very warm but it still gets chilly some evenings so i think it may be better to bring the bags just in case. I hate the cold anyway !

Hope everything is going ok with your packing. A couple of space saving tips which we use when going camping UK or abroad. Try and pack clothes, pillows or any thing that save you space in a vacuum pack bag. You can get those that you roll up to get the air out instead of using a vacuum, or if you are taking air beds which pack to virtually nothing and have an electric pump sometimes they have one end that pumps air out and the other that sucks air out (ours is a campingaz one).

Another tip is microfibre towels, they save loads of room and dry in no time at all. We got these from decathalon, and are not expensive. If you take a charcoal BBQ, you can get a outwell one that folds totally flat, so you just buy the charcoal while your in France.

One thing I will say is we went to France in a Galaxy with a roof box and had a Cabanon Biscaya which took half the car up, the next biggest item was the fridge. So we basically packed around these 2 items.

Hope this was off some help.

Hi Hodgsons et al
Thanks for all the advice. We are heading for a 3 night break next week in Ireland so it is great to have the chance to do a dress rehearsal for our longer trip to France. Different weather conditions no doubt but it will still be very useful nonetheless.
I have been waiting for these http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/80215884/ bags to come back in stock in IKEA .. the plan being each of us gets one bag for clothes, gadgets, toys whatever and that's it. The bags are cheap, sturdy enough but more importantly light and squashable for the roofbox.
Anyone any tips on how to pack the kitchen stuff?. We have enamel plates, mugs, plastic cups. As there are 6 of us the camping saucepans are usually too small for the quantity I will be cooking for. I think I will bring a frying pan, pasta/potato pot and a veg saucepan. I have a couple of small chopping boards and a large and medium plastic bowl for salads and that. I think I will bring a large tupperware container for storing chopped fresh fruit.. melon etc.
Any tips guys ?

My tried and tested formula for packing is:

Clothes, roll them and use soft bags - GOt this tip from Cosmoplitan Magazine in the late 70's, it works!

Kitchen stuff; I put all things cooking in a large green box, this doubles at the other end as a low table or a sealed place for non perishable food. Over the past few years I have been collecting collapsible things from Outwell; the bowl, collander etc. I also have a fry pan with a fold in handle and a tiny folding kettle. I tend to stuff things inside other items to save space. Salt/ pepper goes inside the cups.

I use a 'pic nic' cool bag for a tiny gas bottle, trangia stove, 2 enamel mugs, and keep this handy for a quick roadside bew  if required....you never know.

I put plastic chopping boards under everything.

Pans - we have a stack of Vango pans. We only use them to boil water for pasta if it turns o cold that we want a warm meal.

And finally, much to my husbands a amusement I take my wicker picnic/ shopping basket. Anything that needs to be on hand goes in here e.g. napkins, splades, hand wipes, tea towels. This is the shopping basket (for market shopping) and doubles as a stylish picnic basket. The cool box and picnic vasket are the last items to be packed.

I stuff the glasses with tea towels....just cannot drink wine out of platic...alternatively by tumblers from the super market and leave them rather than risk breaking in transit.

Hi General Sherman,
We are currently in La Garangeorie in the Vendee since Friday. Nights are quite chilly and we are definitely glad of our sleeping bags. Mine is a 3 season one and I've needed it. The weather has been mixed - lovely Friday when we arrived, rain all day Saturday with a massive thunder storm from 2.30 am on sat night/Sunday morning. Yesterday was lovely - warm and sunny and today dull with spells of drizzle throughout. So I would say come prepared for all sorts.
I hear it's a lot nicer at home so I hope you have a lovely trip camping in Clare - which campsite?

Very interesting Claregirl Thanks for taking the trouble to post that while on your hols. I've decided. I will bring the sleeping bags and am going to look at the practicality of bringing cotton duvet covers that can be used as liners or their own if it gets hot. I might be able to persuade a friend of mine to let me use her sewing machine.
Hope the weather picks up for you very soon.
We are returning to PureCamping in Querrin on the Loop head peninsula. We have relatives home from the US who want to camp...both families camp regularly in the US (it's a family disease :)). As the relatives have no camping gear they are renting bell tents from the campsite and we are bringing our tent. We were at Purecamping last year and loved it. Relaxed atmosphere, close to nature and lovely campsite owners. They have a wood fired pizza oven which you buy wood for and they will provide dough for you to make your own pizza. I hope the weather is better than the last time though.
