Hi all, a little advice would be appreciated. I am planning to spend some time in Northern Italy during July and August 2014 and plan to take a route down through France, via Paris (Les 4 Vents), Dijon and over into Italy via the Mont Blanc tunnel and then over to Venice before heading to Garda/Como and then a little further south. I will be taking the caravan and just wondered if anyone else had taken a similar route and if there was any advice you could share that I might benefit from. I assume the journey would be reasonably straightforward, but any tips would be welcomed.

Not been through the Mont Blanc with a caravan. An alternative, depending on whether Dijon is an essential stop, would be to leave Paris on the A4 to Metz and join the German motorway system down to Fussen and then over the Fern and Brenner passes. This is a route I have done in both directions several times. Not sure if its any shorter distance wise. One thing to watch on Italian motorways is as you approach junctions the road markings (arrow off to right) seem to suggest the lane ends at the junction, it doesn't, it just carries on. It took be a while to get it into my head!!!
If you are thinking of motorways all the way from Calais to Venice via Paris and the Mont Blanc tunnel be aware that the tolls with a caravan are over 260 euros one way. You may have already priced it up, but the cost is a shock to some people. Good wishes.
Thank you for the replies. I assume that both routes in and out of Italy are easily navigated pulling the 'van? We may take a more scenic route down through France to get to Mont Blanc and avoid some of the tolls but haven't committed to returning the same way yet, so a trip back through Germany may be an idea. Any suggestions for stop offs on the way home if we choose this route? We have some flexibility, so would be keen to spend perhaps a week making our way back and not rushing from one campsite to the next. We are on holiday after all!

Dave, You ask for suggested stop offs on the way home - there are various variants of the route, but we have enjoyed stops at Mals (Italy), St Anton and Dornbirn (Austria), Lake Constance and Freiburg (Germany) and Colmar, Nancy and Metz (France).
On the outward journey stops at Sallanches or at Chamonix itself on the French side of the Mont Blanc tunnel, and around Aosta on the Italian side are scenic musts.
I agree thast the route could get expensive if you do all-out motorway. i live in northern italy and frequently travel down to the UK. My favoured route is through Switzerland, from Basel to Chiasso - namely because in Switzerland you pay a vignette for 12 months but for a round trip it works out cheaper than paying on the french and Italian motorways (to give an example - verona to Venice costs 9,60 euro by car each way, the vignette 28 euro all year!). and because there is a great road down from Strasbourg to Basel which is free....
For places to stay my company Campiente has some great Campsites in Garda and Venice where caravans are most welcome, I also recommend a trip to our campsite in trieste, Mare Pineta. I work in camping and we have 13 campsites all over northern italy!
On one italian foray, we used the following return scenario:
Camping Fusina, Venice
Camping Nanzel, Lake Garda
Camping Dolomite, Dimaro
Camping Nell, Lake Constance
Camping Heidelberg, Heidelberg
Baren Camp Bullay, Bullay, Mosel
'Twas a good trip ... return from Italy was through Austria to Germany.
