We are going to try France this year (Early September) for 3 or 4 weeks as it is not a fixed time to stay the question is,can we book a ferry one way then book return when we are ready to return or just turn up at the docks and book there and then.Is this the way to go about it ? or would the cost be much more. What about a open ended ticket do the ferry companys do this sort of thing ?can anyone please help.

Derek your best bet is to go to p&o or seafrance website then put in what dates and times you want, then you will get a quote...

It certainly isn't easy to find the best deals from the ferry companies booking on line.

As Barry says, you would normally put in an outward and inward time, and get a quote.

Then you give a hollow laugh, get on here and find where the deals are!

The trouble is, you have to have a guide as to what time/days crossings are cheap for most companies. ie mid-week, out early morning or late in the day. Each co. has its own ideas. Speedferries seem flexible about return tickets. Some companies charge more for a fully flexible or amendable return, rather than a fixed return time.Others charge an amendment fee if you turn up for a return other than the one booked,

I would suggest e-mailing customer services  to ask, don't think you will find the answer otherwise

See posting under Norfolk Line - we've just booked in August for £118 return!!!  Fantastic value - why not ring them up and ask about an open-ended return.  They obviously need our business as this £118 is a special offer, so it might be worth talking directly to them.

We're off to France on Friday morning for the weekend. I got a great deal from P&O Portsmouth - Le Havre, for £70 return for our MPV and 4 occupants! It pays to check the western channel companies from time to time. Don't forget that Calais has serious problems at the mo, coupled with the current industrial action. Gonna be alot of tears this summer, methinks!

Whatever you do DONT just turn up without a ticket or booking - at the very least, book for when you expect to travel then amend before you arrive

If you do turn up without anything you're instantly a captive market and will be charged accordingly

The ferry cost for those without a caravan has certainly come down, and there are lots of offers at present.  However, with a caravan the cost is much higher - as I said in another posting, we've just booked for August for £118, car, caravan and four people - and I thought that damn good value.  We have friends who've just booked with Speed Ferries - as you say for £35.00 return, and they went with Speed Ferries last year.  The crossings are fine, so don't think you'll have to row!!!!  As I said before, let's hope Speed Ferries start taking caravans, and then we'll all be laughing.

Hi Delboy, if you are noy taking caravan then I think speedferries dover-Boulogne is best value at £15 single, just ring up the day before you want to come back or get a friend to book it online for you, you can't go wrong at that price. We are doing that next month.

Just book your ferry with out & back dates & make a note of their French phone number(they will speak English) then when you know your return date jus ring & amend booking--
